Overwhelmed
We seem to have reached an agreement. Having exhausted my bank balance and my patience trying almost every food anyone makes, we have established that the food he dislikes least is bran. Having, literally, starved him into submission for three days in a row, 5pm, 1pm, 11am, he is now eating. By his rules only.
These are, and they have to be absolutely exact, no deviation is permissible. 700ml of water. Add supplements. Add 200g of bran. Add one fistful of straw chop. Stir and leave overnight.
Split into six. Put one sixth in a door manger, a bucket on the floor will not do. When he finishes what's in the manger, add another sixth. If you give him more than this, he will stop eating it.
Five days out of ten he will finish everything. On the days he stops before it's all gone, take what's left in the manger out. Wait ten minutes. Put one sixth back in.
That will sort him except for two days in ten. On that day, make a golf ball out of what's left and offer it on my palm. He will eat three, maybe four, of these through gritted teeth just to please me, but it gets the job done.
Thankyou everyone who came up with suggestions. The big change was splitting it into six. The final key, I think was realising just how sloppy he likes his food and the exact amount of straw he will eat it with.
It's a good job he a) lives at home and b) is such a stunningly attractive horse with a lovely character who is going to be awesome to ride. Otherwise I think I'd have ripped his bloody head off and poured it down his neck by now!!!
