So i have been doing alot of research and i have decided to buy a bateson trailer, i have researched that they have 3 types, can i ask what the best one to go for is please? My horse is 16.3 he is my first horse and this with be my first trailer, even though i am struggling to find any for sale nearish me for a good price 😩

Not a Derby it’s too small for you.

Deuville and Ascot are same dimensions so either are fine. Ascot comes with the tack locker which is very useful so that is what I went for.

They aren’t easy to pick up second hand, a friend wrote mine off when she borrowed it and it took me 3+ months to replace it with a decent secondhand

I have noted that barn doors are alot more expensive tho, i only have a small budget, are their floors anti rust?

They changed their standard floor fitting I think it was circa 2008, so if at all possible go for one less than 10 years old.

Never believe anyone that tells you a floor is anti rust/corrosion/rot - all floors irrespective of what they are made of will have a lifespan, the older the trailer the nearer to the end of that lifespan it will be. Plus the way a trailer is stored/maintained will impact it too.

Thanks, the one that i have seen is 2012 ascot, but i have just missed out on buying it, because i dont know exactly what to look for im guna have to go with a trade seller, but unfortunately they are more money.

Even giant sized ponies fit in.
But their absurdly sized ears do sometimes touch the roof!

Yes my boy is large, so i thought he would travel and load better in one of these... just have to find one 😂😂🙈

I bought a Bateson as a friend, who is an engineer, got one for his son, and it is still going strong all these years later. It was for a TB x Clydesdale, so a hefty 16.2.

I had the barn doors, but I wouldn't again. My horse is not happy being asked to step up into the trailer (unless is it pouring with rain) so I have to use the little ramp which is a bit awkward. Though most people say that their horses will happily learn to step up.

Bateson manufacture lots of different trailers, I think the finish is a bit rough and ready, but I have been happy with mine.

Yor other option is to pay someone reliable to do an inspection of it. I know of two very reliable people - one in S.Wales and one who operates within a 40 mile radius of Banbury if that's any good?

To be honest - if you want a decent secondhand ascot, reasonably quickly, you will need to be prepared to travel a few hours and at short notice

I'd find one further away, pay a local trustworthy trailer mechanic to view it for you (you'll get plenty of recommendations on here) and then just go and pick it up if it's ok.

Horsequest ad ref 215162. Depending which direction you are from Banbury, it might not be too far away?
215719 is West Mids.

Good pic! Excuse me OP for thread highjack, but ihw do you find that he can easily reach the hay net when it’s tied up at the front like that?

Yes he reaches it fine! I prefer him to eat forwards and slightly low rather than twisting his neck to the side attachment ring

If you want a desirable but less readily available make of trailer secondhand, you will need to jump in the car and go and view it ASAP. As said above, Batesons have a good following and they don’t hang around.

If you wanted an Ifor 506/511 you could be more picky, as there are so many more of them :).

Agree. I drove about 2hrs to get mine, it was in need of some love but that was reflected in the price. My only other option at the time was a mint condition Ascot on the Isle of Wight, the rest were up in Scotland and I drew the line at driving for about 7-8hrs ;) . They are really hard to find second hand, and ones that do come up tend to go quickly.

If buying new, Bateson used to give a 7.5% discount if buying direct from the factory, but not sure if they still do this?

Does any one know what year bateson first put boston doors as an option on their trailers? And are the better?

I have a Bateson Deauville and I love it! It is 19 years old now too! I bought it from someone on here over an hour away.

The Deauville has a saddle rack so I don't the ascot is really worth paying loads more for.

Mine had its floor upgraded when they stopped doing wooden floors but as the wood was still in good nick it has aluminium and the original wood in the centre rather than plastic. There is good info on the Bateson website about floors - have a read.

Where in the country are you. A freinds is, selling her Bateson. She takes two horses in it. A, 15.2 and a, 16hh. She's only selling as she's bought a, lorry
