Hi all, i have been posting her for months worrying about my horse ebig lame, finally got a 2nd opinion from a different vet and they did x ray's again and it showed up that her pedal bone has demineralised ie there is a big chunk missing that has disolved over the past years!!! The farrier said it has probably been happening since before i got her and it is very rare, he thinks that maybe she will be fit enough to be hacked out eventually but that is all. Anyone heard of this happening before?
Someone else psoted on my link in the vet section and this seems to be very similar to pedal ostitis - anyone heard of that?!!!

well done for perseverence to find the answear.I f vet says should be ok for hacking she should be ok really helps when you know the problem hope someone can help in similar situation

I had a TB with pedal ostitis. He had hunted all his life, I took him on at 14 when his owner wanted him to have a quieter life.

He was on 2 bute daily but didn't need remedial shoeing and was never lame. He'd been diagnosed with pedal ostitis about 4 years before I got him.

Unfortuately an old tendon injury flaring up meant he had to be pts aged just 16.

Good luck with Amber.

hi

thanks for your replies. gluttonforpunishment what did you do with your boy? The farrier seems to think that this has been going on for years probaly before i got her as the section of bone that has disapeared is quite large...maybe flared up because of the hard ground. Tbh i am just so glad to know finally what is wrong and that it looks like it can be managed (fingers crossed)

TBH we only hacked out 2 - 3 times a week but he was full of it and we usually had a good blast of canter (sometimes a gallop if the brakes failed!) at least once a week if the ground wasn't too hard.

Didn't ever do any schooling sessions and don't think he'd of coped with jumping, but that was more to do with his previous tendon injury than his feet.

He was dreadfully flat footed but thanks to my fabulous farrier and copious amounts of Keritex hoof hardner he was 100% sound with just ordinary shoes.

It's a good few years ago now (about 12 actually ) but I seem to remember we managed to knock the bute off and keep him happy on the herbal "no bute" but can't truly remember.

Hopefully now you know what the problem is you'll be able to manage it and still enjoy riding together.

:)

thanks for that, she is extremely flat footed, has had remedial shoeing since i got her. her feet are a million times better than when i got her tho they have cost me a fortune! Hopefully it will work out and if i can only hack her then that's fine tbh i would keep her as a pet as she doesn't owe me anything :-) (scary though as she has competed at Blair and the HIghland and all the while this was going on in the background :-( big soul)
