oops I pressed go too soon! The subject was meant to be a bit less demanding. Please forgive me!
But to get to the point - am currently looking for something to keep my mare company, ideally female - but the only essential criteria are that it is equine, not in foal, and can live with a hormonal mare on good grazing.
I have been looking on horsemart etc and made some applications to local rescue centres but does anyone know the best places to look?
Thank you.

I have an RSPCA pony and can highly recommend trying them, they have loads looking for much needed homes, and by doing so it frees up a space to help another neglected or abused horse...

There are 2 retired shire x tbs on there which must be rehomed together, can't see anyone taking on 2 big companions like that, makes me want to cry! Thanks for the link. I am now wondering how my grubby little grey would like a pet mule :)

lol!! mules normally form strong attachments to their companions, so if the little grey needs to go out and do a 'job' then stick to an equine one ;)

I have two unridden youngsters from Blue Cross and have found the whole process of loaning from them went really well and they provide good support when needed.

Taking on a companion from a rehoming charity as others have said frees up a place for another horse or in need of recovery and care.

Thank you! Ok will bypass the mules as we are out and about lots. Unless I got two of them!
Think I will stop before I turn into a crazy mule lady.
In other news, I have been offered a llama as a companion. I said no (used to work with them, not a fan) but I wonder if a llama would make a suitable companion for an equine.

I've got one (Reg, ex Irish Chaser) and another coming back off loan if you don't mind 17HH :) Both rescues and would be able to do light work, Reg is better on good keep because he is usually on the lean side, the other one (Alfie) is quite a good doer. Both are really easy to do, Alfie is a total gentleman, a real confidence giver, Reg is..........a sweetheart but does like to go!!
North east Shropshire, either available for full loan if you are not too far away.

A great advantage of getting your companion from a reputable rescue charity is that it will be free from nasty infectious diseases and its temperament and needs will have been assessed eg ok to live in a mixed herd etc. I'd wondered about buying a cheapie at a low end auction but I'm glad I went down the charity route instead, it was much less hassle in the end.

I fostered mine from the RSPCA too (dons tin hat) and they were great. They just happened to be the nearest centre so were my first port of call. I went round and looked at about 6 or 7 ponies that would have done me, it was hard to choose!

Mine was only a temporary arrangement and she's gone back now, but I'd do it again anytime.

Love the idea of a mule....

Thanks for all the suggestions, we have a rescue centre just down the road so have made an appointment to visit tomorrow, and will do some ringing round to others this afternoon. Jill A we are too far away I think - East Sussex - although you've got me thinking it would be a bonus if the companion could be hacked by friends/husband (haha). 17hh fine, although was half thinking of a lead rein pony for my little boy...
Inthesticks, thanks for the donkey suggestion but I don't know anything about donkeys - feel happier sticking to what I know. Out of interest where are you based?

Trouble with donkeys, brilliant as they are, is they aren't waterproof so need 24/7 access to shelter. You'd need to be in it for the long haul as well - they live for YEARS!!!!
