Urgh I'm feeling really deflated. I'm currently looking for a schoolmaster/mistress to restore my confidence. Now I've tried 2 so far which I know isn't a lot but the first one just did not want to work in the school and ended up bucking when I got after him, then proceeded to shoot off when my instructor gave a tiny crack of the lunge whip. The second one I actually didn't even ride as it took off with my instructor in the school and she did a couple of laps before she could finally pull it up, so I refused to get on! I'm seeing one tomorrow and another one on Wednesday but now I'm starting to get really nervous about even riding them. Maybe I should just give up horses....

I'm feeling very sorry for myself right now!

I got the t-shirt !Like finding hens teeth lol !
Gave up in the end , bought a 3 y.o
seroiusly have you tried asking local farriers ?

14.1-15.1 allrounder, 8-14 yrs, don't mind mare or gelding just needs to be a 100% genuine schoolmaster/tress, safe and sane but not a complete plod.

I think you really need to read between the lines in a lot of the ad's and I do feel that a lot of the horses that are advertised in the 'schoolmaster' sections should not be!

Oh and I'm in Scotland!

oh dear, it is SOOOOO difficult! I was after the same (just a bit bigger) and looked all over, in the end went for a super safe, but very green mare. Was after one that was a bit more 'ready to go', but she is so very safe without being a plod that I just couldn't turn her down! Are there any aspects you might compromise on that might help? How about asking around local instructors, particularly those who go out to teach clients on their own horses? Someone might have just the horse that they haven't advertised yet? Instead of reading between the lines of ads it might get you more to take a look at if you call and find out more about the horse up for sale? People might have a fantastic horse, but be terrible at writing an ad! Good luck with your search!

They are out there BUT if they are advertised as such then people know their worth. I sold exactly what you are looking for to a family who were delighted when their nervous daughter tried him out and from having been nervous to jump a 10 inch cross pole from a trot ended the session bombing round 2'6" XC with a huge grin on her face. They paid me around twice what your average 15hh 15yo Welsh goes for but he was a total confidence giver in all spheres from hunting to hacking in the heaviest traffic and from schooling to showing - and ready to go out and do BE90 with a double clear and with a reasonable dressage.

Almost impossible to find in Scotland. I wanted a Schoolmaster/mistress and I started looking months ago.
I have found a cracking little mare who I am going for a second look at tomorrow, but she came word of mouth she was never put on the market. Person selling her sent a text to my friend asking if she knew anyone who might be right for her and lucky for me she said yes!
Even then she's only been broken since April and has only done a couple of little shows (where she came first and second)
Send me a PM of where in the country you are and I will ask around for you, good luck x

Shame, see I have exactly what you're looking for but I'm in Buckinghamshire! Lovely little mare but I seem to only have people ringing up looking for a potential event pony/byrds pony or other such nonsense. She adores her jumping but frankly, as a native type, is never going to win a big dressage competition or jump 5' but she's safe as houses to do any darned thing you like on. Can't you do a weekend away and try things a bit further afield?

Thanks for replies guys. We actually flew south last week to look at the one who was very sour in the school and I was absolutely gutted because on the basis of the advert and having spoken to the seller a few times, I really thought he would be right and he was SO wrong! The problem is I can't keep coming down south as it just costs too much (over £200 for our flights last week and it was a massive waste of time!) Having said that, I would be down quick as a flash for the right horse but it's finding them and trusting the sellers description. Farrierlover can you PM me with some more details of your mare? Do you have a vid I could see? Thanks x

We were looking for exactly this but between 14hh and 14.2 which is even more specific! I have to put my children on it so it had to be exactly as promised. After quite a few disapointing viewings we have decided to buy a two year old highland pony from a breeder with an excellent reputation for producing family ponies. And we blew the budget to buy him! The best of luck, but it is heartbreaking.
