Finding a groom

Where is the best place to advertise?
I've had jobs in the past that i've found in the H&H but the one I need to fill is living out so would it be better to advertise locally or try the H&H? Anywhere else to try?
I need a mature person as the job is flexable and sole charge so they need to be able to organise themselves and basically get on with it.

Any questions I should ask when people phone up? Any tips on spotting weirdo's?

I need a happy person who can speak to the liveries, keep the place clean, turn up everyday but most of all look after the horses very well. I need a saint!!!

Not sure about what to ask, never been in that situation , sorry not much help. hope you find the right person

I'd try the job centre as it's free to advertise with them, and also local feed and tack shops, but do the advert properly, not handwritten or it looks too casual.

You could do mini work trials as part of the interview - see how they handle horses, muck out a stable etc, you can pay them for an hours work.

Get references for the person you decide on and follow them up.

I would try word of mouth first - through riding instructors, friends, local tack shops etc.

I also had some success with gumtree.com. I would try Horse and hound even though the position is live out.

References are a must and do a trial period for four weeks to see how they get on. Write down exactly what you require from the candidate so you can go through this when they call. When I meet them i always say at the end of the interview that I am seeing other people and will let them know in a couple of days!! Don't be shy to ask them to handle the horses whilst on interview - get someone you trust to ask them a few questions as well.

I'm in Herts as well. Normally the local newpaper and cards in the local village post offices as well as tack shops/feed merchants are the best way to find someone.

Thanks we have tried word of mouth and nothing.

sunnyisland writing down a list is a good idea.
There is no riding so that could put people off, but all the horses are nice and easy to handle so it is a good job for someone who enjoys working with horses rather than riding them.
