Finding a new horse - ID cross - suggestions?

Am now in market for a new horse and having seen a few and done some on-line shopping, I have decided that what I want is an Irish draught cross - mainly for temperment and overall build/soundness. I know that they are still around although I think that more recently warmbloods are more popular and I think even in Ireland they are moving away from this.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to find what I am looking for? I know I could scour the adverts, but then find horses all over the country, and my experiences travelling long distances to look at one unsuitable horse puts me off this. I guess what I am looking for is a dealer/breeder who might specialise in this.

Thoughts/suggestions/experiences much appreciated. Thanks!

Yep - I have trillions of the little pets - although more pure-bred than part-bred. However, most of mine are babies - recently backed or ready to back. They hardly ever stay around long! But ID babies DO tend to be easy to bring on.

You could have a look at the IDHS(GB) sales pages too - again, more pure-breds - http://www.idhsgb.com/web/staticpages/index.php/sales_wanted

I'm a real ID convert having ridden mainly Welsh Ds for a very long time. However, I was looking for a new horse to do more XC and after researching, decided an IDx would be perfect. My decision was slightly biased as I livery on an ID stud farm and they are all fabulous horses!

However, as chance happens, my girl is full ID and she is FAB!!! She is athletic, responsive, but also sane and sensible, with a good amount of bone (i.e I'll worry less if I decide to hunt her too!)

My instructor came to try her with me (she is an event rider and has inspired me to do more jumping) and at first when i showed her the advert she was not convinced as she thought she'd be too heavy as a full ID...but she jumped her in the XC field and as soon as she rode back to me she said "'yup - you'll be fine with this horse!". She is usually a fierce critic!! lol

But my instructor jumped all the big fences in the field, and even tried putting her wrong at a few of the smaller ones and the horse just went 'ok, I can jump from there'! She has a fantastic attitude!!

If you'd like some contacts for people who breed IDs let me know...as I said, I'm on fab ID stud/livery and have also in in touch with Dulcie's breeders since buying her. Just PM me :)

And just because i can't resist showing off my girl...!

Really interested to read this thread, as when I recover from having my baby, I've decided that after having WB's I want to go for a full ID or ID cross. Would love to take on a youngster, but realistically I need a horse I can lead the children's ponies from and one I can ride out onto the moor and feel safe. Plus I don't bounce when I hit the ground like I used too!

Dollymix your mare is stunning, I love the fact that she's a little bit lighterweight too.

Thanks .. She is a star and has worked out better than expected. She is only 5 but rides like a much older horses...a real old head on young shoulders.

I bet you could go for a younger ID than some other breeds, as although I hate generalisation as all horses differ, they do tend to have level heads!

OP here. Thanks for your suggestions. Not against a pure ID if not too huge - just looked at P PBID recently & rode him too & thought "where's the plough?":D

Will PM various and see where I get to. Love your grey - I had a dun IDx, lovely sane horse.

The girl in my siggie is passported an Irish Sports Horse but is pretty much a coloured Irish Draught!

I bought her from Emma Hinkley at www.clipcloptraders.co.uk She has a great reputation, lots of people off here have bought from her and I couldn't recommend her highly enough!

Good choice, my youngster is an IDxWB and is a real stunner, also extremely sensible under saddle and very bold. Has the occasional silly moment which I put down to her WB side, but I would never have bought her if she hadn't had a splash of ID in there. It makes for a really sensible, fearless and intelligent horse. I love them. Good luck with your hunt. Keep us posted!!

Can't beat a good ISH ;) Mines a IDxtb, shes very friendly and in general a sweety to lead or to work around. Everyone on the yard loves her! Im more a TB person but she is just a wee dote and isnt to bad under saddle either ;) She has a promising jump, decent paces and seems to enjoy xc, which is good as thats what we got her for!! Shes my first ISH and I would deffo have another, only bad thing is that shes alot harder to fitten than a full tb!! Oh and I forgot to mention shes only 4 and she hacks out alone down main roads and over motorway bridges :D

I have a black irish id cross, only purchased him in September. He's 7yrs old , 16.1hh and has the most fantastic attitude. He loves everyone and everything.
I had a warmblood prior to him and completly lost my confidence!
