For a few days a week I have decided to offer Murphy for rides for a small sum and on the condition that the person helps out after they ride - ie they fill his nets or muck him out or feed him etc (so does that make it a share??)

Anyway, how do I sift through the dross to find a good person? The last time I ventured into this I had all sorts ringing me asking if he could move to their yard (FAT CHANCE) - why do they always disregard what you say on the advert?

word of mouth is usually the best way. Other than that keep a record of those that call and star any that sound promising, meet with them, have them ride in front of you and if anyone comes up to scratch give them a weeks trial. If they don't feel right after the week move on to the next person - but keep prospective riders informed of what you are doing - you are trying to find the best person for your horse to fit in with your needs.

sorry you do have to wade through the cr*p, i'm really fussy about anyone helping me.
How i do it is get them to vist yard and see if they
a - like horse
b- if they know one end of animal to other
c- if i get good vibe and press on them that i need commitment more that experience, as i can teach them

then if happy with above get down at differn ttime to have a trail ride and if happy have them on months trail first...........and see if they fit in etc............

There are folks out there but they can be as rare as rocky horseshit!

But i have two very wonderfull caring people help me

I found my Ideal person to share my gelding by word of mouth - talk to your farrier, vet etc, you never know who;s on your doorstep. Saves lots of timewasters too ! Good luck x

There will ablways be a lot of unsuitable people,IMO most important thing is to find someone you like and who wants to do what you want your horse to be doing.

Word of mouth is normally the best way, maybe you instructer knows someone looking for a share or who might be interisted?

ETS,also might be worth considering what times/days you need them.
I ahd a share a while back that diddnt work because my son went through a clingy patch and got very upset when I tried to leave to go to the horse.
Very sorry to say because of that I was very unreliable for the poor owner, but I could hardly leave my son in tears.
Will be looking for another once he is at school so wont be a problem then

Also handy for owners, will be able to do the weekdays(when they will probably be at work) and not so keen on weekends when they will want the horse anyway.

You could try advertising at local riding schools and then you should get people with a bit more knowledge and common sense!

I wish I was in Wales I would love to share a horse, am a real novice though!

Shame my dad doesn't live closer - he and Murph would get on like a house on fire!!

I think it's a really good idea btw, Murph is much more cheerful for the work, and if it helps, I am pretty free to ride out with a new or potential sharer until you know them properly xx

My rider advertised herself in a local tack shop so I knew a bit about her first! I think that you just have to be very fussy and make sure that they ride as well as you, have the same approach to horses, are 100% reliable and adore your horse and have total commitment. Also she is 20 so sensible (not saying that younger people aren't, necessarily!) I don't ask for money deliberately because I just think that she is more grateful and she saves on my livery costs by doing him on her 2 days. TBH she does him better than YO anyway and she has lessons with my trainer so my horse is getting consistent work. I wish I'd done it years ago!

Thanks hun. I know he needs to be worked more - it would be beneficial for both of us - someone else would get a ride and I would get Murph worked when I cant. win win situation really - now just to find the right person!!
