Finding a young connie

I’m looking for a youngster to bring on and after viewing a fair few different horses have decided I want a Connemara

So my rather broad wish list has now been narrowed down to
Connemara (or cross maybe)
14.2+
3 or 4 year old
Gelding
Not grey - which rules out 80% of them!
Unbacked or lightly backed

Ideally I’d like to meet the horse rather than buy unseen, so England based. But if it was significantly cheaper I’d buy unseen from Ireland from someone well known and respected.

So, where can I look in England? (I’m SE). I’m looking on horse quest, horsemart and nfed daily and am on a Connemara group on fb (but they don’t allow wanted adverts).

And how much should I expect to pay from Ireland? Am I right in thinking transport is about £500-600?
 
British Connemara pony society website and contact some breeders or stallion owners who may be able to help. If you’re prepared to transport from Ireland why are you only looking in the south of England? I think you could find transport from Eire is now a bit more than £500 but that used to be a guide price.
 
There's a Facebook page called Connemara pony community and there are the most beautiful ponies on there. I had a look after Patterdale mentioned it and now I'm smitten by lots of Connemaras (including hers)

Good point. I was thinking that buying from Ireland would be cheaper and make me feel a bit better about buying unseen! But having seen some prices I’m not sure it actually is any cheaper than England and then has transport costs on top
 
Hi, I bought mine from Olivia Chamberlin, In Roscommon, Ireland, she's on Facebook. He was bought unseen and was exactly as described.

She seems to sometimes have exactly what you are looking for. She works them and takes them out before sale, so she knows what she is selling.
 
I buy my connie youngesters from Darren Walsh at Emerald Irish in Wysall leicestershire. He has an excellent reputation. Most are backed but he sometimes sells unbacked 3 year olds, especially at this time of year.
 
There are loads of youngsters for sale over here (Ireland), there are also dedicated Connemara youngstock sales at Cavan sales (and probably at Gorebridge sales too) a couple of times a year. Transporters are in attendance that travel direct from the sales over to UK at very competitive prices. I'm quite out of the loop these days, but asking prices will be comparable to those in the UK but please remember YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO HAGGLE.
 
recommend Barrowby Stud......friend has a lovely connie yearling from there, well bred, handled and she's got great breeding too at reasonable price

So Cortez, by how much am I expected to haggle? I’m a polite English lady and don’t want to be rude by offering too little, but also want to get the best deal 😂

Oh I can't tell you that, it's a Dark Art and entirely dependent on how deluded or sensible your opponent (the seller, to clarify) may be, and how one reads the tenor of the dealing. I've spent entire days going back and forth with offers and probings. I always know what I'm prepared to pay, the trick is in not revealing even a hint of that, whilst discerning what the seller is likely to take.

Daisy Trayford charges £200 to view them and check they are what you want before you purchase. Well worth spending the money with her instead of flights etc Daisy is super experienced with being and selling horses and well connected.

That's the most expensive way to buy Connemaras here. I wouldn't buy there unless looking for breeding stock.
 
When I was looking for a youngster recently I considered getting something from Ireland unseen on a punt (mostly companion, bonus if I could back it) contacted a relative over there who’s in with the right people to find something and was told there wouldn’t be much difference between buying here by the time I’d sorted out transport. If I’d been set on a Connie I might have done it anyway just for the sake of more options over there, but only because I’d have been able to have them help me find someone trust worthy/maybe view. BUT I was bargain hunting so got myself a Welsh for £500 instead and he’s already much easier than my main man even though I didn’t geld until he was 3 😂
 
Thanks for the nice comments about mine! He’s got a viewing this week but now I am agonising over what to do. I know I’ll never find another one as nice, that I could afford. I could only afford one his quality because I bought him as a foal.
A lottery win would be nice!
