If you guys were wanting to find an ex-racing filly - or one bred to race but never put into training (we want her for breeding and for later work) - nice-minded, straight, good feet - but not with her tendons and suspensory ligaments shot to bits by hard early training - where would you look?

thanks

And it's Ascot tomorrow - but we want to know more of a history and have a chance to get to know her better than that.

besides, sales are a breeding ground for strangles.

so any other ideas?

Sales or go straight to a yard. There's one near us who apparently lets the slower "failures" go for a reasonable price. Why an ex-racer or race-bred specifically though? You will never be 100% sure of her training.

Good point - thank you - and good question as to why race-bred...

we want a Tb and they tend to be well handled by professionals for the first few years. I used to be a stud vet, but I'm too far out of it to have any good contacts these days - and don't live in Newmarket any more.

thanks

not really an ex-race filly then!... i was going to suggest you contact a few trainers but since you want one that hasn't even gone that far you may be better going to the sales or approaching a breeder direct

As you're Shropshire based, why don't you try some of the big studs we have, they often have fillies to sell?
There's Shade Oak, Wood Farm, Helshaw, Bearstone, Blakeley just for starters. Of those, Bearstone is mainly flat orientated, the others, national hunt.

I wouldn't say Tatts was a breeding ground for strangles.

The sales really are your best place, and it is always possible to view lots before the sales. If a certain filly in the catalogue takes your fancy, ie. lightly raced, you can contact the consigner of the lot and request a private viewing. You can but ask, and I'm sure most will be happy to do so. Many many lots are sold privately before even getting to the sales. But a filly with straight clean limbs, good feet and a nice temp is going to be worth a bit, even if the breeding isnt fabulous.

Some Friends of mine who own Racecourse Farm racing stables Bristol, have a gorgeous 4 year old TB filly - she went into training but just not meant to race - not fast enough I believe - she is stunning. Fantastic manners, about 16hh, clean in limb and wind. No damage to her at all. My frined is currently riding her out alongside the youngsters and she is very sensible. I would love her but have decided I don't do mares and only got my current ex racer last June so i can't have her. She is for sale and would do any job I believe. certainly looks wise she is not limited to anything.
