Finding livery yards

What is the best way to go about it?

Hopefully I will be looking to get my first horse within the next few months but first I need to find a livery yard that will be suitable to fit around my working hours, commute, budget etc. I have no idea how to go about finding all of the 'hidden gems' though. Unfortunately I don't have many horsey contacts, and particularly local ones, so I don't have the advantage of word of mouth. I have tried Google and keep an eye out in the local tack shops when I get the opportunity to visit but through lack of time/need this doesn't tend to be very often. I check horse advert sites and other sites like Preloved relatively regularly but they normally prove unfruitful.

What clever suggestions/tips do you all have? And how did you find/hear about the yards that you are on now?

Also, if anyone happens to hear of a DIY livery yard with a morning t/o option, long winter turnout hours and (ideally) 24/7 summer turnout, safe fencing, a floodlit school with resonable surface, good hacking and friendly people within a 15-20min drive of Godalming and around £160 pcm and under I'll be indebted to you! ;) 24/7/365 turnout would also be brilliant but school and hacking still required. Good value part livery also considered.

You're a bit out of area but you could try NFED which covers the new forest in theory, but attracts adverts from Surrey and the rest of Hants too...

Otherwise pop into local competition centres to ask what they know of, plus wanted adverts in local feedstore and local paper...

Think you will be lucky to achieve that for under £160pcm. Ours is £35 a week for box and field, plus £2.50 a day for feed and turnout(with rug changes) if required, so that would be £140ish before you factor in turnout service. 24/7 turnout available but only for grass liveries...think there may be a grass livery space, but to be honest have a very low turnover of liveries so couldn't say for definite. We are Hascombe. Pm if you want contact details etc...2 schools, one floodlit, unparalleled hacking, no roadwork required at all, gallops, jumping field, full set of show jumps, well maintained, well run, happy, friendly...
 
Hi, i am not in your area so cannot really help but i found my current yard through recommendations on this forum. I also tried the tack shops, websites like ******* or preloved but not much was advertised and i wanted to have a personal recommendation as well as it is easy to find a yard lovely on paper. A few weeks down the line and things could look quite different. Hopefully someone here will point you to a lovely yard.

Good luck finding a yard and then finding your horse.
 
I found mine on a hack but I guess until u get ur horse u cant do that & until u get livery u cant do that either.

Exciting times good luck & yes u can get all that for the money...i have & i pay half that :)
 
If you're on Facebook, is there a local riding group on there? We have several for our area (Shropshire) and one has over 600 members. It (usually) stays pretty friendly, and over the past year or so I've made some great local horsey contacts through the site. There's always loads of ads for livery yards and plenty more, and people are always happy to give recommendations :)
