I took an unregistered Irish Sports Horse gelding on loan 3 months ago - he has a show name with another name in brackets (presumabley a prefix) but I have no idea what breed he actually is, I think Welsh D x TB mainly but not sure and I'd love to know any history on him - where do I start?!

Unfortunately if there is nothing recorded in his passport it will be very difficult to find any other info. I imagine the first port of call would be to trace his breeder and ask them if they remember!

In which case I'm a little confused as to why you are referring to this horse as "Irish".

What's more, surely to be termed an ISH, they have to be registered?

When I first asked about him his owner he said "he is what they call an 'Irish Sports Horse'", so thats what I say he is, but he isn't registered. On his passport and Farmkey he breed is "Irish". He just looks like a Welsh D x TB, thats my guess and what most people who see him think, including his owner.
But after your replies I might give up now! I guess so many horses are bred and imported from Ireland they're not really kept track of, he didn't get a passport until he was 4, but I'm sure thats genuine. He's had quite a few homes but hopefully his home with me is for life, and thats whats important.
