Not having any luck with the boy wonder, had him up for share and or loan for a fortnight now and had little interest.

He's an absolute gem and would restore someones confidence no end, but had no interest!!

Is it the wrong time of year?

IMO it is going to be harder to loan or sell especially at this time of year as it is coming into winter, people may be less inclined to get another horse now as they will have extra costs to pay for.
Don't give up though!
Where have you tried searching? People on here may be able to suggest more places to look.

people seem to be looking but i suppose at the minute no one wants one for the winter i just got mine back from a really bad loan experience so i would suggest you keep him local and keep your eye on him i went monthly but i suggest you go after a fortnight within the first couple of months

Tell me about it, I'm looking for a sharer to ride my horse 2 days per week, but not having much luck really, I had someone try her yesterday who couldn't even keep her on the track in walk

My sharer's abandoning me for winter, can't say I really blame her. I suppose sharers are often in it for the pleasure & fun side of things and more likely to be fairweather riders + winter isn't a very nice time to ride really. My sharer is coming back in March lol

Have to admit that I have given up my share horse - though that was because he moved to a yard over an hour's drive away plus a ten minute walk down a dark muddy footpath to catch him in a 10 acre field! No chance on a dark cold winter's evening...

Competent and experienced = riding school novice

I once took on a very novice girl with a good attitude and she did wonderfully well with practice and a couple of lessons, I didn't regret it

. It depends on the horse as will of course

trouble is this girl didn't have a good attitude lol
My previous and only other loaner was a compleate novice and she also did really well, she's now got a pony on full loan that she's hopefully buying soon, I was sad to see her go.

Ah Competent and experienced = riding school novice usually means Reciepe for disaster where I am concerned as my 16hh sensitive TB mare is too much for them

I think I will need to go back to the drawing board for an advert for my girl

I just cant find a horse to share! Im not in it for all fun, I want to treat the horse asif its myne, becuse I cant have my own horse?! SO were not all bad :P x

I think part of the problem is that we are all looking in the wrong places and perhaps not advertising ourselves correctly.

TBH after the last attempt at getting a sharer was nightmarish and traumatic, I pulled the ads as I had enough of weeding out the chaff

I have one of mine for share or loan. A been there done it horse and can't get anyone. They say there coming then don't turn up. Or the advert says to stay at present yard and they ask to move him. I am just about to give up

Horseylove if you lived near breaston you could come and have him on share and look after him like his yours.

There's nothing wrong with being in it for (sensible) fun like my sharer OR for experience of ownership
laugh.gif
depends on what you're after.

angua2 - have you tried the wanted adverts of equineadverts.co.uk? That's where I found my two

Tia will love you

I have my horse in adtrader and in the saddlerys but no luck.

He's an experienced hunter and jumps for fun - hacks out alone or in company in the heaviest of traffic. He's a poppet, but no luck

meh!!

He sounds fantastic..people should be snapping your fingers off, perhaps it's the time of year (only thing I can think of)? There was a 100% pony advertised at my old yard, in summer the owner would have loads of calls but it'd go deadly quiet come winter

Havw you all trtied new rider? Thats where my share horses owner found me..... have been her sharer for 2 years now, so we dont all bugger off at the first sign of rain/wind/snow!
smile.gif

PS: I am also competant and experienced, and not a riding school novice LOL

i think that's really cheeky of your sharer, actually ! I did two winters with Brook, through absolutely FOUL weather, and i only gave her up because I really couldn't ride one side of her, and I wasn't doing her justice. We don't all give up at the first sign of rain.

I have found all three of my shares / loans via ads in my signature on forums (here and on New Rider). I always put my location in my profile, and I am honest about my ability (low!).

I'm not tarring everyone with the same brush

! Think I need to put that in my signature so I can stop having to state it after every single post taken the wrong way

I always wonder if tackshops and feed places are the right place to advertise, because those of us that are horseless at the moment dont oftern visit them!! I lost my old pony in feb, and have just started thinking how I would like a yard to sweep and pony to groom ever now and again, but common sense tells me it wouldnt be wise to commit my self financely at the moment.

Sorry that's tarring all sharers with the wrong brush IMO. I started sharing a horse in Sept last year and stopped sharing her in May this year, weather has nothing to do with whether I share a horse or not?

I'm currently helping 2 lovely people with their 4 (soon to be 5) horses, I will go up to the horses whatever the weather. I can't wait till winter, we're all going hunting!!
laugh.gif

Not all sharers are fair weather riders, some of us are in it for the long run and don't actually mind whether it's raining/sunny/cold/hot. I choose the horses I share based on a. whether they are right for me and b. whether I get on with the owners, the time of year is irrelevent to me and I'd never dream of giving up a share horse over winter to restart again in spring... IMO winter gives a fantastic opportunity to bond with the horse you share especially if they are stabled at night and see you are there to bring them in from the rain and give them food

I'm reading this post wondering whether to offer two of mine to share or not?

I haven't advertised yet, but, with the winter coming in, I got the feeling very few would be interested!

As I've never put a horse out for share before, what do people look for??

I'm advertising too for a sharer, and really not looking forward to it. My problem is that although my horse is lovely she has DDFT tears in both front feet and not a lot of people want a horse that they can only lightly hack, and might go lame from time to time. I'm only asking for the cost of shoes though as its more important to find the right person.

So far I've had 3 enquiries, from advertising at my livery yard and on new rider. One lady came to ride on Saturday and I had to ask her how much she weighed over the phone beforehand as I'd forgotten to put it in the advert, which was slightly awkward. When she said that she was 13 stone my heart sank, but I said I'd see how she rode in case she was great. 5 minutes in and Angel went hopping lame, I've no idea if its coincidence or because she was too heavy, but I'm not going to risk putting anyone that heavy on again.

Years ago when Angel was fully fit and sound I advertised for a sharer, and had one girl who turned up in jeans and clearly couldn't ride-she could barely do rising trot. Then she kept pestering me on the phone to see if she'd got the gig, it was awful. I deleted the adverts after that and forgot about the idea. I'm always surprised how many people are scared of hacking out to be honest, or cantering, they only want to school-or maybe thats just the people who have contacted me!!

Oh dear sounds like your all having a bit of a mare so to speak about finding the right person(s) for your horses...
I've had horses on loan in the past...I found them in local freeads and word of mouth really...i did them thro winter no matter what the weather it's all part of having horses!
I had my little mare on part share to two lovely girls...my mare is 13.1 and these girls were as tall as me at 5'10 but weighed next to nothing and they did soo well with her..til she got her injury and I moved!
I would suggest trying Equineadverts.co.uk...seems to be a good site....horsemart, horsequest, horseweb - if it's still going? Try different tack shops in area aswell....put notice up at your yard, people always know people.
I found my last sharer for my geld from yourstoshare.co.uk...I did ask for a confident experienced rider as he can be bt silly and buck etc...but she came along and got on well...bit rusty but I think given time she would've been doing well with him...building a lovely friendship...sadly though he was PTS about 4 weeks into her having him through illness....alawise she'd still be riding him....and I had another girl ride him on the other days....she was a fab rider very kind and gentle...she went to uni...and again he's not around anymore...
I think it can be slightly tougher to find the right person to have your loved horses, shame I am still feeling raw with emotion after the loss of one of mine as I'd jump at chance to have another to ride and love like my own again....I wont be buying for some time yet thats for sure....vet bill to pay off!
But when the time does come for me to have another I shall advertise on here...and be asking about....

Good luck for those that are trying to find sharers...the right person is out there it just may take some time for them to come along!
