Finding Sharers---why is it so hard!!??!!??

I don't even want to ride i just want to help someone out. I don't mind doing yard duties, poop picking, grooming etc etc but i've either had responses from people with youngsters they don't know how to break in/haven't been handled, live over 30 miles away (i did put the area's i was willing to travel too on the ad) or mums looking for a baby sitter while they bugger off on a hack!!!
One woman even want me to pay her £20 a week to muck out Tuesdays and Sat mornings?!!?

that is such a shame as I have a piece of land and would love it if someone wanted to spend time with my horses, I think they're wonderful but as they're not on a yard would benefit from more people fussing over them and my arab would definitely benefit from being ridden, bit as I'm in SE Kent I think the commute might be a bit much;)

I am currently struggling to get my two horses fit, as I work away twelve days a month. I have tried to employ a groom to ride them, but the lovely, reliable girl that used to ride them for me is now in full time employment, so can't, and everyone else I've tried has been really wishy washy and I don't feel confident in them. At the moment I've practically given up on ever getting them fit and being able to event again.

So, browsing through this thread, I had a look at the ads, and there is a lady nr me, who has had her own horses before, and sounds over 30, wanting to ride. I've always been wary of a sharer, and hubby is not at all keen (we had nightmare liveries and he likes that its just us now), but I'm very tempted to contact her, at the least for a chat..

What do you think? I keep reading nightmare stories on here and am a bit nervous, but could really do with someone to ride..

I'd go for it! My suggestion would be not to charge though, as then you can be really prescriptive about what you want them to do with the horse. Once you start asking for money then it has to be a bit more give and take.

Yep Im the same I don't even mind riding just love being round the horses and yard and happy to poo pick, clean tack and muck out.

I'm at the point I'm tempted to give in and get my own

Honey, defiantly try it, there are som good ones out there and you will probably enjoy the company too. I think it's important you get someone whose like minded and you can see yourself spending time with and trusting. Just be careful of people who just want to ride, they need to do the added extras as priority like topping up waters, checking legs, having judgement when a vet might be needed etc.

An email/call won't do any harm, youre not commiting yourself to anything. Just stick with your insticts, you'll know if theyre they right person for you/your horses. good luck :)

Well, I just sent an e mail..... I will let you know. If I'm writing a thread about a nightmare sharer in a few months time I will come looking for those of you that persuaded me....!!

I see alot on people have already said most are green/unbroken or need schooling for share.

Do people who share actually want projects to take on ect, my friend only ever takes on youngsters as she says it best part about a horse.

Just curious :)

I gave up looking an am actually really quite happy with the fact I dont need to worry anymore.

Like some of u have said, 1 teeny twitch at something really quite scary & 'he isnt really that safe' or 'the saddle wobbles too much' hmmm never has for me and i do hours at a time....oh & most recently the not having time to feed but u did manage to find time to ride? Was the last straw....however I have had alme great ones.

Can't quote on my phone but I took idiotpony on. Free share in exchange for schooling and breaking bad habits.
I wouldn't go looking for a problem horse. He bucked but it was that kinda lazy back feet 3 inches off the ground buck. He also had a bad habit of being gate fixated and napping too it.
Both these had scared his novice young owner and being a cheeky nf he got away with it.

He bucked a fair bit the first time I got on. And the first time I hacked but hardly at all after that and its been several months since last doing it.
Napping took longer to cure and could still be a problem for his owner I think but I could work through it.

I wouldn't go out looking for a problem pony or a youngster again but I think I got lucky in that he just needed someone a bit determined and used to silly tricks. I certainly don't consider myself an expert on the matter!

Interesting thread, I just logged on to see if I could spot any threads recommending where to advertise, I have a lovely little 14.2 chunky cob for share/loan and only had 1 enquiry! Hes in local tack shop, riding club, face book and equine adverts - where are all these people who want a steady but forward fun little cob?! I cant believe Im having soo much trouble!!

Lexibell...he sounds like my boy but a tad smaller. Recession? Last sharer was late paying (i put a thread up) & never did give me the deposit!!

Everything is sooo tight these days I thought lots would want to share but seems its a double edged sword!

Keep hunting cos like anything, it really does only take 1 to be the right 1.

I have a magnetic force for crazy people whether it be for sharing or loaning.

Loaned my boy out - went to see him found him half starved, took him home, its about 3 months since he came home and doing well so started to look for a part loan/sharer for him, used the reason why he was coming back into work due to coming off loan in a very poor condition, get threatened with police action by the person for 'slander' (didnt mention her name and slander is via verbal accusation - I believe she means libel or defamation... ;) )

So my quest for a part loan/share continued had a nice family, but they were just out of a riding school so no good for my boy - they told me they were experienced via email however then told me they had only just been in a riding school when they were on his back and walking around the school !

Next person came and rode him, managed 2 seconds in the saddle and was off - pony literally dropped a shoulder! This was a 'very experienced and always asked to ride everyone's naughty ponies' rider. I wont go into the nitty gritty - but I have had threatening emails and made out to be a liar, falsely advertising my horse and named and shamed on several public pages as my horse is supposedly dangerous... this was after she asked to come back to see him ridden by another person .. He was absolutely fine and showed no signs of evil and quietly wandered round on the buckle. This horse you can tie up on to a big, corrugated metal sliding shed door whilst strong winds rattle the whole thing right in front of his head with bangers going off in the field next to him and he'll fall asleep

I have some lovely horses to share and would gladly take people for lessons, to shows, days to the beach, take the ponies on little trekking holidays, anything they wanted and I would provide it. Just seems I attract the bad lot of apples and now I just cant be bothered - I'd much rather have my lovely boy getting fat in a field then put up with any more.

On top of that there is also my sanity, Ive had nightmares, I cant sleep, all I can think about is what people have said and I actually find myself feeling quite down about horses and question why I want to be on a very hard uni course to end in an industry where I will be stabbed in the back constantly... all very damatic and I need to let it go but Im so upset and pretty fuming by the whole thing!!

ive just replied to an add on Preloved where a lady is looking for help with her four horses, ive been honest and told her I havent ridden for a while but am happy to do any chores in return for a little help getting back in the saddle, she is about a 30 minute drive from me but am meeting her monday to see what help she needs and whether we are both suited, im lucky enough to be able to offer weekday help as I only work Tues and Fri, fingers crossed its a genuine advert,
