What a nightmare!

I've had horses all my life, however my mother (after years of telling me that they're a drain on time and money) has now decided to join me in horse ownership. Lucky me has landed the job of finding her a horse.

I would regard Mum as a "competent novice" and she insists I should ride any potential horses first to decide whether she'd be able to handle them or not... then shortlist (as she can only view at the weekends, I'm free all week). What she doesn't seem to understand is that it's NOT THAT SIMPLE.

I'm sure finding a horse for anyone but yourself is pretty difficult, but your own mother, oh God help me...

There is really no reason to this post other than to rant - apologies. Deep breaths!

Good luck i think i would end up getting what i wanted and not what was best for her, lol.

I couldn’t do it for my mum i think it would be like your parents teaching you to drive it just doesn’t work.

Buying a horse is a personal thing but at least you can get ride of some she might like but couldn’t handle.

I wish you all the luck in the world and i think the sort of horse you are looking for to 'look after' your mum ("the perfect one") is the sort i looked for for 18 months and i looked continuously, it was not through lack of trying that it took me that long and many hundreds of miles.
I think it will be difficult for you to try horses and then arrange for your mum to see because the sort i think you are looking for fly off the shelf in a blink.
As i say i wish you luck, you may be luckier than i was and be able to put out the word locally for what you are looking for, i unfortunately was new to the area and only had the internet and other than that it was the notice board in the local tack shop.
Your mum obviously trust you and your opinion, when you have achieved your goal and you see your mum on board enjoying herself you will feel so happy.

Good luck, keep us updated.

I could never do something like this with my mum, we would kill each other so you are a much better person than me!!!

It sounds like a good idea for you to test drive any potential horses just in case they are not as suitable for a novice as their owner makes out, but I agree with skippydo that anything decent for what you want will get sold before your mum makes it over for a second viewing.

I agree with you both and think our only saving grace may be that horses in general are not selling well at the moment.

Ummm... I've ridden out with her before

she's forever asking for my opinion but if I oblige with constructive criticism it offends her! She also cannot understand why, when I'm riding 3 and 4 year olds, I often need to pay more attention to them than to her riding.

She says I can give her lessons (!) but I think I'll be hunting for a suitable instructor for her as well as the horse...
