A friend has given me a halter, she had it for her pony foal and it was too big, my mare is 2 hands bigger, but the halter isn't far off fitting the mare on the biggest holes!!!

All rugs seem to be 3ft at the smallest, mare is 5ft3/5ft6 in rugs, so I can imagine these being HUGE for foalie. I want to be as prepared as possible, so where should I look for smaller ones or shall I get larger dog rugs as someone suggested to me. More important that we get something that roughly fits even if it only gets used a couple of times.

Weatherbeeta do some nice big dog coats that might well fit a small foal. I got a nice one for my Dobermann who stands 31" at the shoulder!

Try dinky rugs they go down to 1'9'' I think they are really meant for falabellas, miniture horses etc but a friend wouldn't be without them for her foals

My mare is 12.2 and in 5ft rugs, when her foal was born on the 15th of feb in the middle of a cold snap I had a mad panic to find a rug small enough.

As you say, the smallest foal rugs were 3ft, so I opted for a 55cm dog rug from Derby House. She is now in a 75cm Derby house dog rug, although this is getting a little small.

I have been told that Robinson's have bigger dog rugs though so I am going to go there for my next one.

Both these store have websites/mail order if you don't live near enough.

The 3ft foal rug now fits her in length but is still too big round the chest (she is fine show pony build) so I think that is going to be sold on.

As for headcollars. I bought the smallest I could find but had to wait longer than I wanted (2 weeks) to halter break her as it was still massive. In the end I put a knot in the long strap that goes behind her ears.

They do go very quickly though, so don't spend loads on tiny stuff. My foal has had the knot taken out and is now on the second hole down!!

Thanks guys.

I ordered a couple of dog rugs last night from Equestrian Clearance, £12.99 so not bank breaking. Can always ebay them if I don't use them, or pass them to someone else like me needing tiny sizes.
