Finding your way around on new routes and getting adventurous

I must admit my horse is brilliant at learning her way round. A couple of times she has 'told' me I've got it wrong and 'insisted' we go her way - both times she was spot on!

Mine isn't, she is absolutely hopeless. Last time we got lost and I turned my reins loose like I learnt in years of reading pony stories - we ended up even further in the wrong direction and in the end a three hour ride took five hours. The best bit was she was really tired and just wanted to go home but when I got a signal for google maps and worked out she was wrong she was still ABSOLUTELY convinced she was right and determinedly napping in the opposite way from home

Hehe! Enjoying reading this thread. I've been at my current place for 8 years and am a very keen hacker so know the routes around there like the back of my hand. If my sister and I ever go anywhere different we look it up on streetmap.co.uk then try to remember the route rather thank bringing a map (not always successfully!)

This weekend we're moving to just north of Braintree, so will have loads of new hacks to explore (plus hopefully some Essex Bridleways Assoc. rides). I've been eagerly looking up the local bridleways on streetmap but feel that now I'm an adult I should be more sensible and take a map along with me lol! I won't bother to buy an OS map, as they're rather a handful when you're riding, and Saf may have a heart attack with this huge maps being draped over her!

Can anyone recommend some kind of map holder, preferably something that goes on your arm, so I can print smaller maps off?
