findus!

maybe if people here realise that horsemeat is edible (correctly done), we may be able to stop these exports ??? Or is that 30 years ahead thinking ?

It does make me cringe I have to say. We dont eat ready meals or burgers luckily but I do wonder what else it is in then. I make a choice not to eat horsemeat, I have no objection to other people eating it if they want but at least expect them to know what they are eating.
My kids are horrified

Well if they've been eating it already, and it's actually cheaper....... (I'm a veggie btw, but have shot many horses as an Inspector, and it always seemed a waste of good meat.)

The only thing you don't want to encourage is the Horse Farmers i guess ? Or would that be inevitable

It's not really rocket science is it ? BUT the passport system would have to be a hellava lot better than it is today - and aren't DEFRA relaxing passport requirements ? I don't know, so long since I was up with the legislation.

Bottom line - eating UK horsemeat = cheap meat = massively reduced horse suffering.

Hmm yes, that would open a can of worms..or would that be labelled as 'spaghetti bolognese'?

No need to worry about it if eating horse meat is offensive to you, go to the bloody butchers, buy the meat you desire to eat and cook it yourself.

Only things that bother me are the blatant lies about content on the packaging, and after seeing the horse slaughter clip the other day... the humane methods used (or not) the actual consumption of horsemeat doesn't worry me.

YUK! but who the hell buys all this processed crap?
I do eat meat but everything we do eat is organic & my OH who is a chef is insists on it!
How can something like Findus get away with not listing Horsemeat on the back of the packaging?

Sorry, had a few glasses :o

All I know is that I live near to Bishop Aukland (near Darlington), the amount of coloureds in dump-like fields is just awful. I am talking HUNDREDS. If not THOUSANDS, every single piece of land you see, they are there. I get so upset when we go over that way. If these horses started to go in to the food chain, i guess the breeding would just go on and on - but then is that a worse fate than awaits them now ? I mean, they must be worth £50 ish now ?

I think the primary source for the UK would be the exports that are happening now though.

Breeders would have to be have to be regulated obviously to get their stock into the food chain....... could this mean that horse breeding in the uk could become regulated ?

So many thoughts in my head ( all to prevent suffering) .....

I am with showpony this type of food is so yak, not really anything to encourage me to eat horse meat if it tastes like that, maybe the reason they taste so bad is because they have been using neddies all this time.;)

to be honest i dont really mind what meat is in my food just as long as it is safe for human consumption and they actually TELL me it's in there!

If horse meat was eaten as a regular thing in this country, then the regulation of horses going into the food chain would be as stringent as any other livestock. This would actually mean there was some point to the ruddy passport system. If you keep animals which are normally used for meat, they must have tags, you must have a holding number and you must register their presence with the LA. If the same applied to horses, then the over breeding etc would stop.

CC - that was my first thought too. :o

Do they even still make crispy pancakes? I've not had one for donkeys............

Tell me they don't contain donkeys.......

I heard a woman on the radio who was allergic to horsemeat, she found out when she unknowingly ate it in France. Like, life threateningly allergic. So I don't know how they can say it's not a food safety issue!

Also, the whole thing makes a bit of a mockery of ingredients as listed on products, no? What the hell else is in there? Sawdust? Bogeys? ;)

its not the horsemeat that worries me but the fact that these horses may not have been for human consumption.. I don't fancy eating bute etc, im going back to basics.... my chickens will have more than the fox to worry about from now on !!

Whilst I understand other people's views on eating horse meat, and the benefits that can come from it. I personally couldn't eat it, I've spent so much time around horses and I know how intelligent (most of the time ) they are which would make eating them hard. I mean they form bonds with each other and humans, I'd find it hard to look at Sandy everyday knowing that I'm eating his species and other horses like him, who are equally as capable of intelligence and love as he is.
I personally couldn't do it, then again Sandy is more of a pet to me and as oppose to something which is there to serve a purpose or as livestock. :o

Still, I'm not opposed to others eating it and I understand the potential benefits if it were introduced :D
