sharer text to say he'd just taken fox a hack and he was absolutely brill, but took him in the school after and fox started acting up.

unsure what to think now! think my boys just taking the mick?

Most probably taking the mick - esp. If he's normally good for you. If I school my lad after a hack he plays up - as he's wanting his stable and feed - now we school then hack :-)
 
My semi retired nutter acted up in the school as he found turning on a soft surface painfull. He has dodgy stifles and found all that kind of work stressful. He's fine out hacking (within the confines of his lunacy).
 
It could be one of number of things causing this, the rider could be over-riding in the school and upsetting the horse, the horse could find working in deeper going painful for some reason, the horse could find circling/turning painful for some reason. IIWY, I'd investigate further.

he's already had back and saddle checked, but i will contact vet and see if they could advise. he's always been more of a happy hacker, its perhaps that my new sharer is as experienced and fox is taking the mick, but i will look into it.
 
He was probably narked that you wanted him to work once you got back from a hack when he thought he'd finished and was about to get his tea or go out in the field. Take him in the school before you hack and he might be in a better frame of mind.
 
I agree with Gloi and I think I would be inclined to take him back in the school either before or instead of a hack once more before involving a vet. Obviously if he feels uncomfortable investigate further.

it wasnt me that was riding it was my newest sharer, which makes me think he's acting up for the fun of it a bit. i will try myself tomorrow though and see how it goes
 
I wonder why people find it necessary to school after going on a nice hack and ending on a positive note. I am sure your horse thought he had finished and was even tired. I would never school a horse after a hack. Try to keep schooling sessions short and take him for lots of hacks. Horses must get so bored most people over school anyhow;)

i can safely say my horse isnt over schooled, like i said before he is mostly a happy hacker, and the majority of the time he is ridden its on hacks. sharer only took him 10 minutes down the road so i doubt he was tired
 
Probably thought he was done for the day, even so. I'd ask her to school first if she wants to do both, see how that goes :)
 
Plus if he isn't normally schooled abd she is new to him, could she have been confusing him, or asking him beyond his schooling or fitness?

new sharers a he lol :) this is an issue im aware of with new sharer as hes coming back into horses after a break. he's had fox a few months now aand they are still getting used to each other, i go up once a week to check how theyre coming on, but the issues seem to arise when im not there. thinking about getting an instructor in to help rectify the problems
 
Agree with everyone who says school first. My cob is exactly the same, if he thinks he has done for the day, he gets really grumpy if asked to start again.
When we used to have weekly lessons, I had to be careful not to get too relaxed when turned in and discussing things with instructor or he thought the lesson had finished and when taken back out, he would jam his ears back and throw lots of little bucks to register his displeasure!!
If I stayed alert and concentrating whilst talking, he realised the lesson hadn't finished and was quite happy to carry on! Too clever by half. :D
 
I find schooling after a hack is much better for the horse, the horse has had a chance to warm up and relax whilst hacking ready for some schooling, I find both my horses school better after a short hack, I dont do it everytime and anyway you should be able to take your horse in the school and expect it to do what you want regardless of horse wanting to be fed tough if they just expect to go straight back into the stable, not being funny but we dont ask much from them on a daily basis an hour or two of work is all and they should go where we want them to without playing up.
