Hi all, just curious as to what your opinions are about this? It seems to me that lots of horses could have had tendon injuries in the past and it wouldn't be noticeable except where they have firing scars.

A friend of mine has been offered a horse with one hind leg pin fired but her concern is that his resale value will be severely compromised and he wouldn't pass a vetting. I have a lovely 12yo boy who has been bar fired in front and he will eventually be for sale- he's sound as a pound but has various lumps and bumps as he raced until 10yo.

Would it put you off looking at a horse/ buying a horse/competing a horse if everything else was perfect?

Wouldnt necessarily put me off looking, I would want a vet's advice about it and wouldnt want to be paying a lot for a horse with them either.

I have a horse who has been pin fired, more than once, poor boy!!

It wouldn't put me off but I can't insure his front legs despite him now being 19 and he was probably fired at about 3 and as far as I know having never had any tendon problem/injury since.

Also it does mean that you can't do any showing or if you do be prepared to be put down the line! Although I think the ex-racer classes don't take in to account scars.

It would put me off, I'm afraid. If the horse seemed perfect in every other way, I'd be asking my vet to scan & have a closer look at any damage & the potential impact. But to be honest, unless the horse came recommended, I'd probably be unlikely to get that far :(

On the other hand, we have a couple of horses on the yard who've been pin-fired, didn't worry their owners so I guess everyone's different! :)
