Grrr.. Bloody fireworks have started already, and I have a petrified Pointer shaking under my feet, who isn't going to go out for her evening wee now!
It's also obvious when people who live near to my yard have had fireworks recently, as all the stables are trashed, and some of the poor horses wont have eaten their hay and are still on edge in the morning.

I don't want to be accused of being a killjoy, but many other civilised countries have banned unscheduled private fireworks and only allow licensed, organised displays. This way, if a school or whatever is going to have a display, it's going to be advertised, and people who have animals (or babies!) can prepare for it, and there isn’t going to be random blasts every night for weeks leading up to and after November 5th.

I think we should go this way too. What do people think?

Well fireworks are already illegal over here but it doesn't stop them? I worry about my bunnies

Dogs aren't worried by them thankfully.

I agree, my yorkshire terrier is terrified of fire works, i nearly lost her last new years due to them. i was thinking of trying her on these calmers for this years firework night but people starting letting off fireworks last weekend.
I cant constantly give her calmers over the next month, incase someone decides to let fireworks off, im already taking her out in the garden on a lead every night just incase.

I agree with you that they should be restricted to professional displays (I personally hate the things but saying that a door slamming makes me jump so I'm probably just a wuss lol)

However if they're banned they'll end up going 'underground' and people will still get hold of them, it's more likely to get worse in that case as it'll become a tabboo (sp) and all the 'cool' kids will be setting them off in fields to show off but not get caught.

I think I'll just hibernate untill Christmas lol.

I'm petrified of the bloody things! I can't go out at night near fireworks time, or I end up scared out of my skin, jumping at every bang. Late Oct/early Nov is soo not a fun time for me - staying inside with music and/or tv on loud to attempt to block the noise out.

Thankfully both my horse and dog are fine with them but tonight I felt scared walking the dog. Id heard fireworks going off and I had to pass a group of young lads, I just imagined them throwing something at us. Ok Im being totally paranoid but you just never know.

My boxer has been whinging for two nights now - he absolutely hates them - keeps pacing round, up on sofa, off sofa, upstairs, downstairs, staring at me doing those under the breath whines. Should be banned and only allowed on one night only 5th November and thats it.

Can honestly say i have never owned an animal frightened by fireworks,my old dog would sit with us outside watching, the dog that we used to have when i lived with mum and dad would lay at patio doors and go sleep whilst we let off fireworks in garden, and neddy couldnt give a toss

,obviously they have never been let off right next to him,but bonfire night/fireworks dont stress him out at all

I'm lucky in that all 3 of my horses don't mind the fireworks if they are out so they will stay living out overnight until all the fireworks have died down. One cat I had would watch the fireworks out of the back door!

I really wish that people would stick to November 5th for their displays because whilst my animals are ok, I know that there are many people and animals that are frightened of them.

I think it should only be allowed on certain days so at least you can perpare for it. Last year we were giving sedalin to one horse every night for over a week....not good really. My collie is petrified of the noise also, she hides and refuses to come out, my lab would go outside and watch tho if he could

Im not fussed about them either way, i think they are a ridiculous waste of money, may as well just burn 5£notes but each to there own. Just wish they wouldnt keep doing round here!!

I also cannot believe how people can find so much money to, quite literally, burn.
Mind you, I get cross at people throwing eggs, and flour on Halloween, when people work hard to produce our food, and a lot of people would be very grateful for flour and eggs.
I may just be a miserable old bag

I also agree that they should be restricted to professionals and their events.

I look after my friends pony each year for approx 5weeks around the fireworks time. he arrived saturday just gone as where he lives is like beirut already from the kids getting ready for school in a morning then when they come home and all the way through the night. for obvious reasons he is petrified.
He comes to mine and has a lovely holiday where he doesnt need to be sedated etc.
bring on a ban

I hate fireworks-mostly for the same reason you guys do, my pets

my pugs have never heard a firework ever so I'm concerned about that. My Dads dogs hate them one usually scurries off and hides the other one is very vocal, with chasing them off and Dad and OH never get any sleep, how ever....... we have just bought a plug in from the vets, it lets a smell of "mother" out apparently very relaxing and comforting- we shall see!
