My friend sent me this e-mail
On Tuesday night a group of careless and foolish yobs set off fireworks next to our horses and sheep. On this occasion none of them were hurt physically but I am sure they would have been mentally terrified.
Our dog was petrified and ran until he reached the A75 Castle Douglas road where he was hit and killed by oncoming traffic. Storm was always such an obedient dog and would always wait at the side of the road until any vehicles were past. He must have been so frightened and confused which led to this horrific accident. He will be greatly missed as he was a wonderful friend and companion to us all.
The following day we found one of the fireworks in the horse field which could so easily have hit the horses.
The thugs that killed our dog came back the following night to set off more fireworks. This time the police caught them in the act and charged one of the boys.
Fireworks should not be sold over the counter to anyone and should only be used at organised displays on bonfire night. Fireworks cause distress to animals and their owners and I think banning them is the only answer
I trawled through the Petition the PM--I know, I dont have much faith either, the lobby from business is as strong as ours but:
This one has the best wording to fit what most of us want:
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Firework-abuse/
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to License the use of fireworks for public display only on recognised dates.
Every year countless pet and wild animals are killed owing to the random letting off of fireworks. Children, in the main, insist on annoying and terrifying elderly people and pets. There is no end to it and I ask the government to restrict the purchase and use of fireworks to public display only. I am not against fireworks but I am against their random 24/7 abuse
