Brought horse in tonight, left youngster out.
Neighbours have just started a HUGE firework display, v loud and v big, right next to the horses field.

I can't go and get him as just had a caesarean and OH has just gone out for a v well earned pint after looking after me for past fortnight.

I am SO angry and so worried!! They KNOW we have horses and know I like to be told so I can get them in.

The bangs are literally so loud that the floor is vibrating.

Absolutely worried sick now and there's nothing I can do. There are 2 left out, one is a v calm cobby pony but the other is a 3yo sec d who is anything but quiet.

What to do!????

This happened to us last year. Display right next to the field. I went with a torch and stood by the gate - didnt dare go in as he was hoolying around - terrified. When it finished I went in a gave him a big feed and a cuddle. Next day found 6 spent rockets in his field  idiotic.

Is there anyone that you can ask to go and check them for you? I feel for you as we had a professional display in the field next to us last night, but luckily a friend offered the horses a sleepover a couple of miles away.

They may be happily grazing and ignoring them with any luck.

To be honest a lot of horses (I know ours anyway) just seem to watch them and then get bored and carry on eating!

However, I have not had a big display near to our fields, just the odd house nearby who set off a few and ours have never really be bothered.

I have never heard of horses really panicking about them - they may for a couple but after a while I think they just get used to them. If yours is 3 then the likelihood is he will have seen them before??

We are right next to a housing estate and the first few on day 1 tend to worry them but by day 2 they are bored and don't move away from the hay when they start. I expect we'll find 30-40 spent fireworks and half a dozen+ lanterns as usual

Really feel for you :-( horrible feeling,I do hope they are ok. I had a problem when i stayed in Dorset for a while and rented a field with no stables, i had to move the horses for the night as women who lived next to the field decided to have a bonfire / fireworks party and when i explained how frightened the horses would be she just said it wasnt her problem and she didnt care! Our (fairly new) delightful neighbour over the road is having a Halloween party now with kids screaming and shouting, cars parked all over the road and our property and pumpkins everywhere which sent my youngster skitso, I'm just waiting for them to start letting fireworks off as its just the ignorant kind of thing they would do - wish they would p*** off back to whatever city they came from. Think fireworks should be banned except for professional displays!

OMG (((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))). We were talking about it last night - how fireworks should only be allowed at proper displays now, I hate the damned things.

Stay calm, and then tomorrow morning, send a rocket up while they are trying to sleep off a hangover. Hope your baby is ok x

Try not to worry, look on it as bombproofing your youngster, when hubby gets home, send him to check, I know it's worrying but you also have a new baby to worry about. Hope all goes well

I do agree with this - horses have to deal with many 'scary' things in their fields at night that we wouldn't be aware of. The thing with fireworks is we think about them being scary so assume the horses will be scared. I am sure a few may be, at least initially but if you can, have youngsters in fields with old timers who don't care and then, even of the young ones run about, once they realise noon else os bothered they tend to settle down.

I prefer ours to be out at firework season as opposed to being shut in stables just in case of any stray fireworks

I live on Woodbury Common, and Lympstone Royal Marines regularly train there, shooting and doing grenades and there is also 3 shoots around and horses don't take any notice of the bangs and until last year didn't take any notice of fireworks, until our not so lovely neighbours had what verged on a professional display in their back garden. It wouldn't of been an issue except rather than aim them out over the empty field the out them over the house (this led to 3 terrified dogs, also not normally worried by bangs) and directly over my field. Which led to petrified horses that we couldn't get any where near.

When I went round to theirs and let rip, they didn't see what the problem was. I said 1 it would've been courteous just to let us know and 2 I could've put them out the other side of the farm.

It's as courteous as another neighbour that backs onto horses field ripped out their garden hedge (fair enough) but also went into field and took out part of my hedge last week and
left loose barbed wire exposed and didn't even bother to tell me and they called themselves animal lovers!!!

We worried ourselves silly the first year we had our made. Funny thing is she loved them, she used to strain her head out of the stable door to watch them in the sky. Now, weather permitting, we leave her out to watch them. After the first dozen or so she just gets on with eating. Hopefully your youngster will work it out for himself that they are just very loud colorful bangs in the sky. I must admit though I would also be furious with your neighbours

Don't think they usually tend to bother with them. And the neighbours are well within their rights to let fireworksoff

This is the attitude that makes my blood boil. What happened to thinking of others and not just doing what you are allowed to. The selfishness of people amazes me. This country is turning into a nasty place to live with people doing whatever they like regardless of the conseqences of how they affect anybody . For God's sake noone has to have fireworks in their garden there are many big displays around and they are far too loud these days to be acceptable. I hate the bloody things and they should be banned apart from professional displays which should be advertised fully so people can avoid them.

My mares got very get upset the first year we had them because we went up and hung around with lights on to check they were okay. Our yard owner likes to let off a couple  but the past few years they've been fine! Weve left them to it because being around them stresses them more. My mares a bit special though, the ones that whizz are terrifying the ones that bang are fine!! :p

I would prefer them out than in stable, I was on a livery yard were they done a display in the sand paddock. One of my horses was fine but the other one basically ripped her stable apart. She must of been terrified bless her the yo then made a suggestion I should pay for the damage she made :(

OP isn't saying they aren't allowed. OP is saying the courteous thing would have been to let her know first. Which it would.

Just because you are allowed to do something doesn't mean you should forget your manners entirely surely?

The firework code states that 'As well as due consideration for others in planning the time of fireworks use, and the volume of noise, special care must be taken when pets and other animals are involved.'

So clearly they are not within their rights to set off firworks next door to horses
