Fireworks should they be sold to the general public?

I will sign but every year the same petitions are made, and the Govt just quote current regulations which they stupidly think are adequate.

I think only licensed displays too. Its a pity, but too many thugs/irresponsible young people/idiots get hold of them.

Sadly I think nowadays they should just be for public displays. Too many fall into the wrong hands. Shame really cos I remember the days of having bonfire parties in your own back garden, there wasn't all the trouble and horrific incidents as there are these days.

No, i love fireworks, but not in the middle of a country village with animals all around! I hate it! We have horse watch tomorrow!

No they shouldn't. In fact, I can't imagine why anyone would want to buy them...... they're rubbish as far as I'm concerned and who wants to spend a fortune to watch it go up in smoke? Stupid things...... (bah humbug)

I agree. NO NO NO NO.
There are too many irresponsible people around to have such a lethal weapon in their hands IMO. How many times do we hear of house fires caused by fireworks through the letter box, or animals hurt, scared, frightened witless by the darned things.
I'll get off my soap box now and go and calm down.
For those who enjoy them let them go to public displays

Fireworks are banned here in ireland...but you still hear plenty of them going off round halloween.but there usually just small bangers and the odd into the sky one's.they tend to be found mostly in the hands of feckless teenage boys tho which is a problem in itself

im glad there illegal here....there dangerous and unnessecary!not everyone needs to set off a couple off fireworks for halloween.
getting a licensing system in order so that people who want to watch them can go with their kids to see them in a safe controlled display seems a way better idea!doesnt happen to often over here though.People just couldnt be bothered trying to go through the rules and regulations associated with the safe use of fireworks where im from...so we just stick to bonfires!

here public displays can get a licence to set them off...i think the fact that their illegal makes the proper public displays so much better!plus you only habe to listen to them about once a year!

I think that they should only be sold to people qualified to set them.

My sister's ex was trained and qualified to run firework displays and many types are restricted in this way already so it would just mean extending that. He did once do a display in her massive garden but generally I don't agree with home displays. This was ok as he had the suitable equipment training and technique.

It is too easy for people to buy them for home use and for them to get into the wrong hands and be misused. Home displays are dangerous too, people can't judge how much space they need and don't take sensible precautions.

We've always set them off at home...my dad set them off for me and my brother when we were kids....my OH does them now for our kids.

Family comes around- we have food and fireworks...its a lovely time.

Don't see why the vast majority have to suffer because some idiots misuse them.....

Its like saying ban driving because some people drive too fast....

We are becoming a miserable nation of killjoys where everything that is fun is banned......

There are no public displays around where I live...unless you want to take your kids to a pub ...which I dont.

Yep, I do get a sense of De Ja Vu with this every November. I'd be happy if they just cut down on the bang element. It's perfectly possible for displays to be done without the earth shattering vibrations.

Someone was asking on my local freecycle for earmuffs for her child, yesterday. THAT is how bad the 'displays' are round here!!

I do agree - but do you warn all your neighbours with dogs and horses, that you are going to have a Fire-Work Party?
Most of my neighbours are total half-wits. I don't mind one jot - as long as someone warns me beforehand.

I want to know is what happened to that supposed new law that you could only set them off on certain days around Nov 5th and New Year and in certain time periods? Because that seemed a good idea so we'd all know when they were likley to happen.
But it certianly isn't the case at the moment.

And are you sure that you really have the space? do you have adequate faire fighting kit? How do you store them? How do you set them off? How do you ensure that other fireworks aren't set off by sparks? Where do the spectators stand? What does the person setting them off wear?

I went to a family display when I was younger, they stopped doing them when they had a firework that went off a bit strangely (possibly defective) and shot horizontally towards the people watching. Luckily no one was hurt - although a wheelbarrow was damaged. They realised that it was impossible to be completely safe with explosives and that it wasn't worth the risk.

Unless you have several acres of garden it is pretty difficult to be safe.

My sister's ex wear fire retardant overalls and a face sheild. At big displays he sets them off by remote control, at smaller ones he has a special torch to light them that doesn't have a flame. He also has fire extinguishers. Do you have these precautions?

Even if you do lots of people don't. They put them through letter boxes, throw them, set them off in the street, store them inappropriately, have displays in inappropriate places etc etc etc.

We have to try and protect the public. In the same way that we insist that you have an appropriate licence to drive a car that proves you have met necessary safety standards you should have to get a licence and meet safety standards to buy fireworks. This wouldn't prevent people from having them at home but they would have to get a licence to do so, thus vastly restricting their sale to the responsible people prepared to get a licence and be safe.

Fireworks should absolutely not be sold to the general public. I believe in licensed, organised displays only.

It's not just the hooligan element either that's the problem - there are even people who are "sensible" with fireworks but don't bother to warn their animal keeping neighbours.

My problem is never knowing where or when there's going to be an impromptu firework display in someone's back garden. At least with a licensed display, people with animals in the area (and people with small children too) know the venue and also the time and date so that they can make the most suitable arrangements accordingly for their animals (and kids). Unfortunately, private individuals nowadays light up fireworks for any and every reason imaginable and at all times of the year - and there's no way dog, cat and horse lovers can prepare adequately for this and keep them hidden away 365 nights of the year.

I am also very proud to say that my parents, who run a small town hardware and garden supplies shop, get inundated with enquiries as to whether they sell fireworks. Every year they absolutely refuse to sell fireworks. They could make quite a bit of money from selling fireworks, but no, on principle they won't do so. Well done Mum and Dad!!!!

My horses are down at the farm safe and secure. My dogs are in the house.

All the neighbours are out setting off their own fireworks.....

Seeing as its Bonfire night...I would have thought the preceeding 364 days were ample warning

Well...you lot seem to live in places where offenders are wandering the streets indiscriminately setting off fireworks, accidents are happening left right and centre and everyone pets are distressed. I feel for you....but Ican honestly say this doesnt happen where I live...there will be fireworks tonight, tomorrow and possibly saturday....and thats it.
I hear what you're saying...but I think this whole attitude of banning things is ridiculous....what next? Do we ban knives and all have to eat with spoons??

Fireworks are explosives, and should only be sold to a licensee, for organised displays.

Explosoves are being sold to Joe Bloggs on the street where is the logic

COMMON COURTESY COSTS NOTHING.
However, I do have some seriously nice neighbours who always warn me if they are setting off Fire Works - but some do not.
I never set off Fire Works but if I did, I would always warn my neighbours.
As it happens, I am giving a Lecture to my local Riding Club this evening - and my Woof is coming with me.
No way would I leave him "home alone", tonight of all nights.
