Fireworks, some people are unbelievable.

i believe most horses will be fine, i dont have any issues with mine & my old mare used to stand & watch them.
The YO decided one year to have a display at the yard  but there was nothing we could do about it. We were told to keep the horses in (didnt agree with this bit, but they were firing them over the fields), but we went down to keep an eye on them. Only one out of 12 was a bit twitchy, none of the others really reacted after the first few mins.
MY ADVICE - if they do fire any over the fields check the ground for sticks, bits of plastic & unexploded gun powder. We were finding these things for weeks!!! But other then that take a deep breath & if needs be get some sedaline or similar.

ETA i also dont see much point in fireworks, scare the animals (cats/dogs) half to death, & costs a small fortune to see a pretty bang  Would much rather go to an organised display for a fraction of the price!!!

I wouldn't be overly worried to be honest, and I freely admit that I *hate* fireworks. My horse doesn't mind them, she might get a bit jumpy, so I make sure she's in and settled before it starts, and she's fine. My old pony hated them and would always charge round the field in a panic, but she always survived. The other 2 horses I have owned weren't bothered either.

My old cat isn't bothered at all, but my younger cat is a wimp and hides behind the washing machine. Not sure what our pup will be like - just going to make sure she's in and secure, and see how she gets on. She's heard small amounts of fireworks, from parties, and wasn't bothered and she isn't worried by thunder, so I think she'll be fine - we do get some displays quite close to our house though, and she hasn't heard the screamy ones before, so going to be cautious anyway.

When I was a kid I used to take my pony bareback and in a rope halter,up to the other side of the hedge where my neighbours had their bonfire party and watch(so where did my confidence go!?)
It seems the only ones that need the tranqualizers are the owners! :)

Fireworks should be allowed on 5 November and that's it. There should be a special licence requirement to use them any other time. That's my penny's worth anyway.... sm x

Horses and other animals are individual just like people!

We have had quite a few dogs, the ones we have now are not in the slightest bit bothered by fireworks but the 2 labradors we had previously hated them and had to have sedative from the vets when the local display was on.

On the horse front I have been on 2 yards that have held bonfires and firework displays. I would say 80% of the horses were fine. Last year the yard owner insisted on having a display dispite a few of us raising concerns. The fireworks were very close to the stables and we kept all the horses in. Out of my 5 the 3 younger horses were fine, also they could see the fireworks. They seemed mildly interested in what was going on. The older 2, one being a 30yr old pony were not so happy. We have a jumpy ID x TB chestnut mare you jumped at every bang and wouldn't settle in the stable. The 30yr pony old absolutly hates them and spent the whole night running around her stable sweating up so ended up spending all night with her trying to calm her down. All the other horses on the yard were fine apart from a 17hh SJ who attempted to jump a 7ft breeze block wall (ironically was owned by the YO).

I don't have a problem with normal displays as long as you are given a warning and it is a reasonable distance away from the stables (i.e. not right next to them). Although I think it gets silly when bonfire night seems to span a 4 week period.

Agree, someone set fire works off in a field next to my old pony and he went mad. He ran round and round, so bad that for 2 days after wouldn't leave his stable, and was really ill the day after. My dog hates them aswell, she cries and barkes all the way through, nothing helps her, apart from drugging her:mad:. (Same with the old pony after that night I had to drug him every year.)

I hate them.
