i have a hannovarian who when ridden can be very lively when ridden out on hacks and sometimes when being schooled he is one cooling mix and palcid but he is still lively
i have had his back and teeth checked recently so there is no pain involved.

just wondered if there is anything else i can do to help calm him down?

thanks

Accept that he is like that and always be a tad like that whatever you do. Make sure he is on a high fibre/low sugar diet. Lots of turnout and hay.Work and patience and basically everything I have to do with mine who sounds similar in temperament.

My horse is very similar - easy to do a real gentleman to handle . However he is a complete live wire when out and a nightmare unless he is in front .At 13 yrs didnt think much would change him , however relaxing my hands and not "fighting " him has helped ,the rest I put down to character !! Good luck

I agree with gigs, relaxed hands and sometimes riding on a longer rein works wonders. If i ride mine held together too much he starts to spook, spin and be nervous of his own shaddow ( he a bit special). Mind you when i first started ride out with a longer rein it took some getting used to, feared for life etc. this may just be his way

Maybe change his diet (gradually though) to one that is entirely fibre, try switching the cool mix for an unmolassed chaff and include a vitamin supplement to ensure he gets everything he needs. He doesn't sound like he needs the extra energy from a mix, also hay is great for calming horses down sometimes, try giving him a small haynet before tacking him up. Good luck hope I've helped!

Hi golden wonder, I had same prob with my gelding last winter & he was on cool mix too.

I was told that cool mix is actually just all the left overs scraped off the floor so each bag is different energy-content wise, some days it could be full of race horse cubes (Hence the reason he was loopy!) i took him off it and kept him on alfa-A oil, speedi-beet and changed the cool mix to spillers H&P cubes & I noticed a huge difference!

He always goes abit strange at this time of year so im going to try that "Magic" calmer...tried "global herbs calmer" and it was Sh*t! lol

The best advice I could give feeding wise is to take him of the cool mix, the name is very decieving..should really get on to trading standards lol

Good luck!

i just wanna say thanks for all your replies!!!

i will now look into getting something like horse and pony cubes and try a different chaff.
would hi fi origianal and linseed flakes have any effect to his excitabilitie (sp)??
