did anyone else have trouble in the showjumping, especially in the novice on sunday? my horse was tapping out jumps left right and centre. there was so much going on around the ring, when i was going not only was there the fair ground to contend with i had terrier racing one end and hare coursing the other! i think his eye was slightly taken off the game. bless him. although i think it did for many as after looking at the results there weren't many clear rounds at all.

I did not go this year but presume the SJ ring was the same place with all the trees in the middle and very busy ring. I did my first IN there and the SJ track was huge

For some there is just too much to look at and defo took my girls attention away from the job in hand. Like you say not many clear rounds but does make it less of a dressage comp to give the likes of me a chance

Well, my very careful horse that I nearly gave up eventing in favour of show jumping had five...yes five fences down. Unbelievable, he'll occasionally have one down but never more than that. He didn't seem spooky or phased by it all but went into a sort of trance. I wish I could do it again because I wonder if I could've snapped him out of it by giving him a tap with my stick. I was absolutely gutted. Am hoping it was just a one off due to the arena.

Looking at the results I'd say lots of people had the same problem.
 
We decided to do the PN on Saturday for that reason. She wouldn't have coped with dogs everywhere, and I would've wanted to watch!
 
i too had 5 fences down and like you nothing really wrong, he was calm, got him to the fences on the right stride and still they fell. well its makes me feel better that someone else had the same problem, i was in the o/r section and there were no clear rounds, infact there were only about 3/4 out of the whole of the novices. i think it must have been all the goings on that made them not conentrate. still onwards and upwards musn't dwell!
 
Mine weren't as bothered by the goings-on as I thought they would be, and I don't think any of their courses were as big as they could have been (was there sat too), however that slope does come into it a lot, even if you manage to hold them off the fences on the way down it does interfere with their rythme. I watched the IN sj, and a lot of people were just steering round, which surprised me at that level, the horses that had been schooled to canter in balance up to and away from a fence really came to the fore, and I only counted about 3 or 4 of them!
 
Yeah, I understand about keeping a horse in balance and in a rhythm. I promise that really wasn't the issue! I show jump outdoors regularly at venues with a much bigger slope than Firle and over bigger courses. My horse was definitely away with the fairies on Sunday. The only thing it can have been is the surroundings. He's a sensitive little blossom....bless 'im.
 
It was a jumpers track which didn't allow horses to touch rails without being punished.

Personally we were a bit appalled at the standard of riding - but that is just my opinion - well and my mother's as well!!!!!!
 
I was in the scoring tent on sunday so had a good view of the SJ arena and yes it caught many horses with many knocks. The ground was undulating which didn;t help and there was very few clears so you are definatly not alone. Was talking to an instructor that was also scoring and she suggested that more event riders need to practice their SJ on grass many SJ practice in an arena and only ever jump on grass when competing. Just a thought but this may help for next time.
 
Yeah. Mine happily jumps double clear round Newcomers and 1.15m opens outdoors normally. Ah well, no point dwelling on it, looking forward to the next event now
