First 3 day event (Osberton) advice

My friend is doing her first CC1* there this week too - she's going tomorrow, and I'll be there at the weekend to help, and to keep my lorry which she is borrowing clean!

Things to take -

any spare bits of tack you have
enough buckets
mucking out stuff
gazebo if you have one (handy in the rain)
I always like having a tarpaulin on me as they are inifintely useful
Nice long lead rope for grazing in hand
Something nice to wear for trot up
Some nice food
Wine ;)
And for this week - sunscreen!

:)

Good luck!!!

Just go and enjoy yourself. You will feel like you really have packed everything bar the kitchen sink! Don't panic too much about forgetting odd little items as there should be a tackshop, and i'm sure you would manage to borrow an item if neccessary.

Just remember the horse's passport, otherwise you will not be allowed into the stables! If you forget anything else Osberton is not a million miles away for either you or somebody else to deliver that crucial piece of equipment.

Oh, and don't forget your camera, so we can have a report it all its phototastic glory!

Hope you have a fab time (i'm sure you will!), and good luck!

There are plenty of experienced riders there. I suggest you ask one of them if there is anything you are unsure of. You are better to ask than get it wrong. Not knowing the rules is not an excuse - they are on the FEI website!!

Hello! I am a first timer at Osberton too... travelling up tomorrow morning and quite excited!! Think all is pretty much ready and loaded...
I am in sect A so have dressage thursday, hopefully meet you there anyway!
Enjoy and good luck! :)

'fraid i don't have any advice on the kit list, as i've never done a 3 day, but what i do is logically dress myself and my horse for each phase and think through it that way with the packing!

Main thing is just enjoy and have a brilliant time, i think Cyclops on here is going too for the CIC*

I'm going with another friend who has her horse there (but she's not riding it!) on Sat/Sun to watch with her.....but very very best of luck!

don't know if this is obvious to you or not, but a girl we knew who was doing a 1* star for first time last year didn't present her horse to the vets in the holding area at the end of xc, it is a requirement not an option, so take buckets, sponges and scraper with you to xc area, water is provided, and last year a company had a water spray available for washing off too. but most of all enjoy!
best of luck

Charlotte - I'm doing the 6 year old CIC* and I too didn't know about presenting to the vet afterXC either!!!! oooops! - this forum does have it's uses!!! I will be at the Rider Briefing tomorrow but don't know how to recognise you!!! - I live just down the road in Retford so if you need any shopping bringing in we need too meet up so I can bring it in as I drive up each day. PM me your name and I wil try to find you - managed to find Charliemouse as soon as she had arrived at Badminton Grassroots this year so quite good at the detective type of thing!!!! Are you doing the CCI* or ** p.s. I'm a nervous wreck - A CIC* virgin on a green 6 year old!!! recipe for disaster??? If I don't manage to meet up with you GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN!

Hi Come over and have a drink either to commiserate or celebrate!!! Doesn't matter which - we'll be needing a glass or two either way

Make lots of lists! Pack heaps of feed and hay. better to have to much than too little.

Lots of buckets/sponges and scrapers for after XC in the vet check. Get the water on and off quickly to help bring the horses temp down. The vet will probably check heart rate and temp as soon as you come in, then again after about 10 minutes of cool down. I like to ice and walk alternatively throughout the afternoon. Taking them out for a graze for a few hours late afternoon is great for letting them stretch and loosen up.

Don't stress about the trot-ups, but make sure you have practiced so the horse trots nice and straight on a loose rein. Make sure horse is shiny and plaited, but no hoof enamel, a clear oil is fine though.

A little white board is useful to write down riding times/riders breifing/when the course is open for walking etc. Makes your organizing your helpers easier too as everyone is aware of whats happening next :o

I love the dynamics of 3-days, they are so much fun, especially after the XC when you relax briefly before stressing about the following morning's trot-up!

Best of luck :D

thanks all for the advice! i didnt realise you had to present to the vet after xc. I think i may be asking alot of questions!!Xx

The vet at the end of the xc should be looking out for you and approach you so don't worry too much about it. They will keep you in the enclosure until they are happy with your horse's recovery rate and are happy to let him go back to the stables so make sure you have all you need at the end of the xc to deal with him - drinking bucket, wash down buckets with sponges and scraper, headcollar with bridle number on, sweatsheet depending on weather, towel, etc.

In CICs you don't need to present to the vet after the xc. There will be a vet at the end to look for lame horses or blood on the horse but they will take no action unless they see a problem in which case they will keep you at the finish if a member of the ground jury wants to look. After you have finish just carry on with the routine you have for a BE event. Don't be a nervous wreck - it will just be like a decent novice and there will be plenty of people to ask if you are not sure of something.

Old Vic - thanks for your comments - just shows how little I know - but need to learn! I'm still a nervous wreck tho!!! It probably comes with doing your first ever CIC at the age of 50++ and on a 6 year old!!! (who happens to be an absolute star - shame about the jockey!) Will be taking on board any advice and help I get over the next few days- thanks in adcvance
