Hi I've just had my 12 year old mare AI'd for for first time, I imported her from Belgium at 6 and suspect she may have had a foal before. The AI process went like clockwork, no fluid retention or problems. Stallion has high quality seamen and vet has had foals from using him. Just had 14 day scan and no foal. Vet was a little surprised given process went like clockwork. I guess it's just one of those things but am just wondering if there is anything I should be worrying about or considering for the next time? I am new to breeding so any thoughts gratefully received! Thanks

I can't resist, sorry.

I think next time it might work better if you use semen instead of seamen. :D

PS My friend AIs and sometimes has a failure first time even though scans looked fine.

Nature rules herself. My mare took first time in 2010 to Archie RID. Then failed three times in 2011 to a different stallion, left empty, failed twice in 2012 and ended up being sent for natural service. The second stallion was an older horse and the semen did not travel well.

You will just have to try again and keep your fingers crossed.

Just to wish you good luck. It is so disappointing when AI does not work. I had a similar experience years ago. We finally bred the mare at home with our own stallion.

Fingers crossed for you.

Just try again still not to late for this year our mare did not take until the third time of AI she was 11 at the time.

Thank you for all your replies. Sorry for the slip on semen!! That made me laugh. I will try again. The stallion I am using is older but as vet has had other foals this year hopefully not an issue. Fingers crossed for next time!

Just wanted to wish you luck with the second go.

I have two mares at stud at the moment, one was AI-ed today - keeping everything crossed for the 14 day scan. Its our first attempt :/

My mare was 13 and a maiden mare. It failed the first time, but it worked the second. The stallion I used for AI was about 20. I've now got a very happy and healthy colt! Good luck :)
