First Aid supplies. Does your yard supply one for horses?

One of my Owners got me thinking today when she asked if I had first Aid supplies that everyone could use on their horses.

Is this normal for yards to supply?

I do have a Human kit in the barn obviously.

I obviously have my own supplies and I happily, and frequently, use my own stuff to treat everyday minor cuts and scrapes etc on Boarders, and would, if need be, use bandages etc

I just replied that I used my own stuff as required but that Owners generally built up a collection of their own and if I was medicating/treating their horse then the owner supplied bandages, lotions, potions, pills etc, or I did - and billed them for it.

Fair enough, if you are happy to provide first aid for your own horse, but I think you have to be careful treating other peoples horses without veterinary instruction, I am sure you would be more experienced that the owner, but I would advise caution, from a liability point of view. Though in an emergency I am sure you would advise owner that they should get vet in immediately but that you would render first aid as appropriate.
No I do not think you should get involved, my own first aid kit is extensive , and expensive, I often help out others in the yard, but they always forget to replace or to pay for the items. If you are asked for stuff, I would provide it and say that they will be billed for it, but certainly not an open ended commitment.
PS I am not too sure if you have to have human F A Kit if these guys are not your employees.

Im assuming you are a full livery yard? If not and just part or assisted then never heard of it being provided unless owners are happy to be billed for it! However I work on a full livery yard and although at the moment nothing needs medical attention they do provide everything so I assume at least some medical kit, have used hibiscrub and cotton wool that is the yards on liveries horses however things like vetwrap would add up quickly in price so think owners should be billed.. if that makes any sence :p

We have an emergency kit so we have supplies to hand if a horse is injured and the owner isn't there. It was something our yard manager suggested and all the liveries contributed one or two items. If you need to use anything from the kit you replace it.
I've never been on a yard where the yard owner has supplied a first aid kit though - I've always expected to have my own.

Simple answer no. it is horse owners responsibility.
However I see no reason why the yard can't have one and everyone billed if they use something as if your lucky stuff goes out of date before you can use it all for one horse

I do agree you should have a first aid kit for people though (as you do)

We have a communal drawer full of emergency supplies, bandages, vetwrap, cotton wool, gauze, salt, iodine, clean towels and various other bits and pieces ( after an emergency incident where we spent ages trying to find something clean to stem bleeding on a nasty wound while waiting for the vet). I then have my own supplies but it is reassuring to know if anything happened to my horse while i wasn't there everyone has access to first aid supplies.
As Liveries we all ( including YO) bought a few bits each, and any new liveries since are made aware the kit is there should it be needed. We are only a small yard of less than 15 horses and everyone knows each other and the rule has always been if you use anything replace it, and its always worked well.

Nope, we all have our own and YO has one too and if anyone needs something they don't have we just chop and change and replace what we've used. We all know where each others are in an emergency but we don't just help ourselves for everyday stuff.

I have a "OMG" kit, which anyone can use in a dire emergency, but I also have another everyday kit which is mine and mine alone!

As a sharer I pretty much rely on owners/YMs to supply everything (I supply care, sometimes money and time). Was very pleased that a previous yard manager had some basic farriery (sp?) tools to remove a half-off shoe once. As far as I know very few owners would have such things on a livery yard so communal ones are perfect.

Agree with the comment about supplies going out of date. Most owners kits I've seen have first aid bits and bobs bought as and when over many years... But replacing on the dates would be expensive for just one horse.

My YO does have first aid stuff that she will allow liveries to use but it's kept in her house (she is usually around, to be fair). Her daughter is a vet, so when she's around we have a vet on site and it's brilliant :D

Our yard is 100% DIY and the YO a farmer with no horse knowledge. We all have our own first aid kit containing items of varying usefulness! Mine has always been the most compresensive in terms of useful items and so people do tend to borrow from me but if I am not at the yard I they always text me and ask 1st and then replace what they have used. It is daft for 15 people to all have the same basics sitting around. When I was on a full livery the yard they had their own kit and charged for any stuff that was used such as vet wrap but not for stuff like cotton wool or purple spray.

:D I love this, an "OMG" kit, excellent idea. I shall make one up forthwith.

Diapers, betadine solution, syringe, wraps, tape, cotton wool, scissors and phone numbers.
That should do for emergencies and is enough to stop bleeding and sluice a wound out.

I do have a Farriers kit, but it is pretty well redundant as non of the 20 or so horses on the yard have shoes on. (Thank God! I'd hate to write that cheque out:()
