First Aid tips - do you have any ?

I am collecting tips from owners on first aid - for treating wounds and all that sort of thing. Do you have a tip or do anything that is really useful but which is never suggested by vets or first aid trainers?

e.g. Something you heard about or something you do which is really handy. Maybe a specific type of nappy or whatever for poulticing or something else you have come across that works well and is cheaper or a substitute for ordinary first aid stuff.

Tampons for plugging wounds. You can vetrap over them until the vet arrives, and they have handy strings for them to remove them!
