I'd really like to start SJ affiliated but thought it might be an idea to do a clear round over a bsja course first.

I know you can buy a ticket to do a BN course without affiliating, but can I go to a venue and just do the clear round before the BN as you would a normal clear round?

Yep, but have you also thought of trying Trailblazers SJ? You get courses of the same heights (ie 75cm, 85cms, 95cm etc)and built properly, run under BSJA rules BUT without the cost of the ticket plus entry fee (and you can actually get placed!). I found these quite helpful after my horse and I had a loss of confidence phase and were out of the BSJA 'loop' for a while.

I did trailblazers before i affiliated and i found it really useful, 1st-3rd win money too!

It's held as a championship as well and if you qualify you go to the finals at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire, and that was the best jumping experience i've ever had!!
