first clear round with new horse, SJ report!

Gosh, some harsh critics out there ;)

I boot my horse and I wear spurs, just because you have spurs on does NOT mean you are booting the horse with spurs active, I know I can boot without my spurs being active, and you look to be doing the same, you are not turning them in, you are not jabbing, the horse is not reacting in a *oh ouch* way so I have absolutely no crit for you on that front. True, your lower leg could do with some more stability, but that will come and I know you are working on it.

You go out and continue to have fun and enjoy yourself - for someone to say you shouldn't be jumping him is just not on IMO, you both look to be having a whale of a time, well done :)

Agreed.

you shouldnt be wearing spurs full stop in your lower leg has any signs of being unstable;), I would work on leg before wearing spurs. They are most definatley turned in on occasions. The horse is very honest if you ask me!

In an ideal world no one would wear spurs because every horse would be perfect. She is not being cruel, she is not jabbing the horse in an adverse way, she is not jabbing the horse in the mouth, sawing on the reins, unbalancing the horse...there are things to improve on, when is there not, but some of the above crit is just way too harsh - she is out having fun and enjoying herself and her horse certainly looks to be having a blast too, which is great.

There are tons of vids posted on here and I have seen so many threads full of *wonderful* and *perfect* and *great* when I want to say something negative, but I don't as it isn't my place...I think this vid has been jumped on and so I gave my opinion, there is nothing detrimental going on in that vid, things to improve on, yes of course, but nothing that warrants *you shouldn't jump your horse*.

I am horrified at some of the nasty comments on here. When someone posts such a fab, happy post, why is there any need to criticise. The Op didn't ask for instruction, I think people should keep their ill informed & unneccesary opinions to themselves.

I read the post and was smiling to myself. Really well done, your face at the end says it all. Your horse is lovely & looks as happy as Larry from start to finish. Hopefully this is the start of great things for you both.

actually, I was waiting for an answer.. I wondered if it was because it may of been an incident to the horse from the awful pony thellwell type kicking in the videos.....with spurs! so not pointless thankyou

I personally would go straight back to basics, if you had ridden like that in my local RC with spurs on you would of been pulled aside.

If booting with spurs on, and carrying a whip was having no the opposite effects and causing nappiness I think I would definately get back to basics before the horse is ruined

you clearly havent actually read what I have written because if you had you wouldnt have been waiting for any answer. Nor are spurs/ whip causing nappiness:confused::rolleyes: I can assure you he did NOT get kicked with the spurs, can i also point out they are ROLLERBALL IMPULSE spurs ! Frankly Im bored now with the discussion.Im perfectly happy with my horse and what we are doing, thank you however for all the concern:rolleyes:

I think you did well too.
Lots of top showjumpers have appalling lower leg positions but they wear spurs and seem to do a fine job...
At the end of the day you were riding positively and you weren't interfering, so it wasn't the prettiest but I know what it feels like the be nervous but to get on and do it anyway. At 2ft6 I think just to keep your horse straight, forwards and not interfere is fine, the horse is more then capable of helping you out over that sized fence without too much bother.

I think your doing really well :).

thank you very very much sienna:)

I could have deleted my vid given the way this thread was going but tbh i have NOTHING to be ashamed of and Im proud of our round. The spurs are the rollerball impulse type and as I said , arent even touching him when I kicked. He is a happy, cheeky pony with his ears pricked and we had a blast:D

thank you so much firewell. i know it really wasnt the prettiest, we have had plenty of other rounds that really were much smoother and didnt need spurs on those days, but i didnt bother posting vids of them... they were easy, it was just on this day i felt id got over something with him and got through a 'cheeky' day. I can see now why some people might only post their most polished performances now:o but real life isnt like that, espec at my megre level:cool: thank you again :)

Well done, glad you are having fun and regaining confidence :) Hopefully BE80s next year!

Re the spurs: he's happy, you're happy, they're rollerballs, and you're working on it, so try not to let people get you down ;) My lower leg isn't always the best but it never seemed to bother Bronts or Wibbles. At least you havn't cut his sides open like a certain local event rider round here!

He is a beautiful horse, and congrats on the win!

A wee bit of constructive criticism, though; instead of just sticking spurs on and crossing your fingers, though, you might think about going back to basics for a bit and doing some work on stabilising your lower leg. You CAN'T pony club-kick with spurs on! He's obviously a lovely honest horse, because he's still doing his best for you despite getting some almighty socks in the mouth and having his sides walloped like that. I think before you try BE80 you might want to have a few lessons to work on position and stability, before he gets sour.

My old mare would have disembowelled anyone who'd tried those pony club kicks while wearing spurs!!!

I agree. Nice looking boy though, he's got a lovely pop on him :)

Totally disgusted by the kicking - spurs or no spurs - just to get some red ribbon! One day the horse will bite back and serve you right!

Firstly WELL DONE :D he is super cute ! He also looks a happy wee chap so you are clearly treating him very badly ;)
Secondly= Some users get a bl00dy grip of yourselves!!!
Q

Gosh I read the comments before looking at the video and I was expecting much worse!

He looks like a super sort and didn't look at all concerned about the spurs so I am not sure what the 'experts' are complaining about!

You know you have things to work on (as does everyone on here!!) and you rode him very positively- I wouldn't have even known he had a nap in him unless you had said so the spurs worked at getting him forwards.

I wear spurs all of the time with my mare who can be nappy and it is very possible to pony club kick with spurs on without the spur itself coming into use.

Well done anyway and I hope you are still feeling good about your achievement :)

NSN- Having met you in real life when you had your previous horse, ignore all the ***** posted here!! Looks like your becoming more confident and with that your progress will increase quickly. No1 does the perfect round bar the arm chair critics on here!!

I also agree with millitigers post above. I wear spurs too and your lower leg might have been moving but the spur wasnt turned in so Dazzler didnt look bothered in the slightest!

Hope to see you out and about over the next few months and to see your progress :)

Ems - thank you hun:cool: also millitiger and quadro:) We are getting along just great:D I was surprised to see this thread still going, lol, it was a good few weeks back now! We've been out and done another ODE event since and he was a star, clear xc and 2 down SJ but he was really taking me to the fences and no kicking was required. The napping out hacking on the other hand, was stuck for 45 mins going up and backwards the other night:rolleyes: I still won though, even if I was knackered, he's a dude, love him to bits even with all his cheek:D

Very well done - well ridden! Much better to be positive and ride forwards then worry about looking pretty and end up having naps and stops.

Ignore the harsh criticism, its very easy to make snarky comments from behind a computer screen
