So we finished the ride :-)

Roo was really good for almost all of it, we did the 10 miles in about 2 hours or so. Mostly laid pathway so mainly walk and trot but we had a couple of really good canters. She had to be a madam and kicked my friend's horse (she's the one who gave me a lift) who luckily is ok, small cut from a glancing blow but ok otherwise. We had a bit of a bronc when I wouldn't let her canter when she wanted to but otherwise, and for the vast majority of it, she was really good. She certainly behaved much better than I expected, apart from those two things.

Really enjoyed the ride, very well organised by the Rotary Club with lots of marshals esp at the couple of road crossings there were.

Really pleased with her - I half expected to die and really didn't know how she was going to behave but overall she was brilliant.

I completely sympathise - you just never know what a youngster may do :) well done for putting on your brave pants and taking her :)

she's not even young - she's 10!! But she hasn't seen or done much ever so very green from that point of view.

I don't find the brave pants often but I feel fab when I have - I was bolted with and badly broke both ankles so am not very confident especially at speed but I love the feeling I get once I actually start out cantering and Roo can shift, for a fat cob she has a fair turn of speed about her and it's amazing :-D

Yay, well done! :) I sympathise with the need for brave pants: I don't like uncontrolled speed much, either! Just wait, you'll be signing up for more and more of these rides...

We're hoping to do Ticknall ride on 8th or 9th of August although we may be trying a different bit. She was in a pelham with roundings and while she would pull up in the canter at the end and I was able to stop her going up into gallop I had a bit of difficulty getting her to steady her canter up a bit (hence why she kicked my friend's horse - she doesn't like other horses behind her in canter and I normally keep her behind anyone we're with but she was determined to go faster). Thinking to try a slotted kimblewick as ideally I'd use double reins with the pelham as the roundings obviously blunt out the curb pressure (which is what works on her) but I can't deal with full canters in double reins so am thinking a slotted kimblewick will give better curb pressure while helping me to teach her to steady in the canter
