Evening all you lovelys :D

Ok so the weather is improving and I'm finally (touch wood) getting on with my new mare :D

She is 12 in March, ex racer and in her previous home she hacked alone a lot.

Sooooo im planning, now the snow has gone, to get in the saddle and actually start riding her .... 7 weeks, three rides .... its about time right! :p

Should my first hack be alone to continue with the theme that she hacks alone and to keep her knowing its totally acceptable and safe to be out alone OR do I go on our first hack with a quiet other rider?

I'm planning to go on a none road ride first, around some new fields the Y/O has just taken on ... it wont take more than twenty ish minutes!

The other hack is all roads sadly but takes about 30 to 40 minutes and I will choose a quiet time, possibly next Saturday or Sunday morning?

Andvice always appreciated :)

I'd say it depends on your horse, yourself and your potential companion.

My old share was alone for first rides as much easier than in company. Rides after that were with a calm horse and calm rider. I did longer road rides in company as I was nervous on roads so wanted a calm friend to keep me happy.
Did last owner give you a heads up on which worked best? (id go for what she was most comfortable with as first time out in new home and new owner)

Enjoy it :)

I would go alone so to speak but with someone walking or on a bike.

That way, horsey doesn't think it will always have a companion at your place.

Or tell someone when you leave and when you intend to be back, plus the route you are going

Hacked my new boy out this morning for about half an hour. He came 11 days ago, the day before the snow arrived and this was the first time I'd been able to get on him.

We went alone as I had no choice and will be mainly hacking alone anyway. Went a walk on the road for about half an hour, stopping to see a friend half way.

Now it's over and done with, looking forward to getting back on tomorrow!

I'm thinking alone as well. I dont want to be tied to hacking in company because its not always going to be available and I dont want to rely on others and im confident enough to push her on and reassure her if she is unsure of anything.

:)

Go alone with someone on foot. Make sure you come and tell us how it went :)

:D Im like a kid in a toy shop at the moment and cant wipe the smile off my face. We got off to a bad start, I posted on here just how I wasnt doing well with her and her attitude (she was pretty vile) BUT over the last week things just seem to have clicked and I know things are going to go from strength to strength with our relationship.

She is pretty awesome :o ... but still a cow bag :p
