One month after my Little Red arrived we went for a hack. No big deal really but it is my first proper hack in two and a half years - I've frankly been too scared to do anything other than potter around nearby fields since breaking my hip on a hack. I needed some encouragement from a local rider - I stopped to talk to her weeks ago when I saw her hacking round our village to ask if she wanted company - and she invited me every day over the weekend. Today was the day so rstor, BP and new gel riding tights came out and off we went. Red was a star and I really enjoyed it - we saw lots, she was ears pricked all the way round and I forgot to be worried. Long way to go with the confidence but so far so good.

Well done! The first time getting over that fear with anything is always the hardest, your confidence can only increase now! Hope the next hack goes just as well if not better :D

Well done you! I know that "forget to be worried" feeling! Last Wednesday I went xc schooling with a few others from our yard, YO was instructing us and ended up riding one of the horses who was very green. My daughter had done the same with our boy some time ago, but it was a one-off, so this was only his second time on a xc course. He jogged, walked backwards, tried mini-bucks and threatened to run off while we were waiting, but when pointed at a fence was honest and sensible. For the first half I was terrified, then I started to enjoy myself! It's little over 2 years from when we moved him to the yard, from RS with very little hacking, and he napped so badly I had to be led out of the yard, building up our solo hacks very slowly, to the point where I can go out alone for nearly 2 hours as long as it's not windy! Wishing you all the best and lots of fun with Red as you get to know each other.

Thanks everyone - losing confidence is so draining but one month in and I'm getting just a little bit back. Got a great instructor who's managing to deal with my riding failings without making me feel like a failure (we're on a mission to get to a test this summer), a hacking buddy who is just the right amount of pushy and a fabulous little mare who I'm loving spending time with. I feel v lucky at the moment and long may it continue!

Well done!

Having had confidence issues out hacking myself, I know how you feel and I know what a huge achievement it is to feel like you started to even enjoy it!

There is alot to be said for the right pony, the right instructor and a confident hacking buddy who knows how far to push you without pushing too far.

Well done - you must be so chuffed! :D
