Our 7 month old JRT is having her first heat, I noticed that she has had a more swollen behind and was weeing more frequently for the last week or so and today I noticed blood as well.

I just wanted to ask a couple of things - she seems very quiet, usually she is hankering to sit on the sofa with us but she is lying in her bed looking forlorn in the kitchen. Is this normal? Is she in pain?

Secondly we are half way through a training course but what's the etiquette now assuming we can't go as will drive the uncastrated male dogs mad? Will the trainer just say tough luck or let us join another course later or refund? Not sure what happens

Thirdly and I think I know the answer to this one, going for long walks off lead are a big no no aren't they? I took her out at the weekend before I was certain she was in heat and met other dogs and no problems.

Time to book her with the vet methinks....

firstly your girl might be feeling a little low, first seasons can take it out on a bitch, but she won't be in pain.

You should not take her to her training class, tell your trainer they will more than understand and should freeze your membership.

NO do not take her out for walks at all, for a couple of reasons, first one, you may get attention from other males, they could also sniff their way to your front door!!! the second reason is, there is now a very easy route for germs and bacteria to enter your bitches body, so keeping her at home in her own garden will cancel that risk out.

Keep her rear end clean, use baby wipes to keep her clean and fresh.

Good luck

Thanks DD that helps.

Mr V - my vet said it doesnt really matter when they are spayed. We just wanted to wait until she was a little older and robust I guess. We'll get her done when she has finished sometime in early in the New Year.

Our vet recommends spaying mid way between seasons, so about 3 months from now for you.
I would take her for walks but on a lead, she'll go mad otherwise! At least shes small enough to pick up if a dog turns up.
