First horse?

Hi,

It sounds like you already have a lot of experience already - but since you will be paying the bills - what do you want? You mentioned what your instructor suggested but what is your gut feeling? And what do you want to do with the horse (competing wise, fun rides, hunting etc)?

In your position I would look at a young horse that is already backed and working - at least then you can start work straight away and use the skills you already have. It's very tempting getting a young/unbacked horse but there is no guarantee it will be right for you and the type of competition you'd like to do.

Anyway - good luck in whatever you choose to do and keep us updated :-D.

In your position I would be looking at a young horse but one that had been backed and ridden away as you can at least have a sit on it and see how it feels at walk trot and canter. if you get an unbroken one and then discover you don't like the feel of it ridden you will be in a position where you either sell and buy another one or have to put up with a horse that you don't enjoy as much as you could. It also means you do not end up with a horse someone else has tried to start and discoverd it has a talent for removing the rider!

I just worry things will be different if the horse was mine and I didn't have someone there every time I worked with it

You are right, being responsible for your own horse is very different from helping other people to do their horses. I wouldn't recommend an unbroken horse as a first horse for any-one, no matter how confident or capable a rider they are.

Things may change and you may end up somewhere with little or no support

I'd make sure you live your dream and not one that someone else has presented you with

Good luck with your search
