Yesterday, as I put Trixie out I noticed a small patch on the side of her head, like a drop of tree sap but very oily to touch. I didn't even suspect that it had come from her as there was nothing to note on the skin under this little patch.

This morning however, there is an almost circular, weeping sore about the size of a penny in that spot and a little run down where the hair has come away with the crusted weeping.

I have hibiscrubbed it, rinsed it, dried it and put Demobion on for now.

Having had a good old Google at ringworm - I don't think its this - any ideas? Just a nasty bite maybe?

It might be a touch of rain scald, it gets a bit weepy. If you have some Maliceb (sp) you could wash it with that, or Amaverol ( that's a bit stronger, and does do ringworm!)

It does sound more rain scald than ringworm, do you have any pictures??

i wouldnt run the risk. if round and sore. wash all headcollars ropes brushes stable doors etc in virkon e and wash horse in imaverol solution. think imaverol is a POM from your vet. you could wash horse in virkon e but it is a bit harsh! and you still have demobian? wonderful stuff guard it with your life!

LOL at the demobion - I have half a tube left and using it sparingly!!

I am almost certain its not rain scald (have had that on another horse) and its just one patch on the side of her face pretty much where the cheek piece attachs to the headpiece.

From what I have read on the internet - ringworm seems to be dry and scaly - not weepy as this is.

Hopefully by tomorrow it will have dried up and started healing - always the optomist

ETA: It doesn't seem to be in the least bit sore or itchy for her.

RW, Frank gets random (often round) weepy (sometimes slightly yellow) that then gets scabby where it has weeped and the hair comes off.

He has had skin scrapes
we don't know what causes them, they can come up anywhere, he came in with 4 on his belly the other night, and he has a couple on his face. He also gets them under his white blaze.

I don't always spot them straight away but normally a couple of days application of sudocrem and they are gone and the skin is nice and clear and the hair comes back.

we don't know what causes them, I think it is just him having a reaction to different things, I think some are caused by fly bites, others I think appear if he bashes his head on something. They aren't exclusively fly reactions as he gets them in winter too sometimes, when he is too hot I think. I suspect he has an initial reaction and then gets a very slight infection there.

I have tried to get pics of them they don't come out very well, I must try again with the camera on hi res.

just for size this is 3 he had on his bum earlier in the summer after I had treated them.

Also sometimes they are really itchy to him, sometimes not at all!

Thanks Ester, that certainly sounds similar although Trixie has never had one of these before nor is she the type to react to fly bites, allergies or the like - Good old tough Welsh skin!

When Frank's hair falls out on the patches what does the skin look like underneath? Her's was quite pitted and yukky if you know what I mean!

I'll take the camera down tomorrow morning (just in case it hasn't healed over night!)

Just seen your photo Ester - they look very clean and dry - but I suspect that is after treatment as you say. Her's is very weepy.

yup this would have been a week later I think

he didn't get them for the first year or so, the sudocrem method has been a trial method, sulphur based mud fever cream also works, imaverol also helped a bit but not hugely. He doesn't get them all the time he will go a good 3 or 4 weeks then get a couple.

when hair falls out at first skin is very gooey and wet looking underneath.

My method is wack loads of sudocreme on and then the scabby bit softens and it all comes off, I will try and get a better pic of them in progress tommorrow- or he might have a fresh one if your lucky and you get a pic too.

I certainly wouldn't worry about it atm.

Not sure it will help, but my mare came in from the field a few weeks ago with about 6-8 similar sounding dots all down her face. They looked like bits of sap where the fluid had wept out and dried. I picked them off

and bathed with some hibiscrub, they were like little zits with small indents underneath which wept for another 15 mins or so. The hair came off so she had tiny bald spots for a while.

They just healed up over a few days, helped along with some cornucrescine when the skin had healed over. You'd never know it had happened now. No idea what it was, it hasn't happened since

I wondered whether she had been bitten by something or been rooting in the hedge.

Certainly sounds very similar milliepops.

No idea what it is, haven't come across anything quite like it before so its been good to chat about it on here - this is why I love HHO

No matter how long you have had horses, something always pops up to surprise you!
