I’m looking to enter my 6 year old exracer into her first in hand show! However it’s been many years since I’ve done it.

I’ve forgotten what I need to wear and what she does? I have a black micklem show bridle at the moment and no show clothes at all, please advise what gear is best for in hand?

I know I’ll need to plait her mane, will her tail need it as well?

Any other tips and advice would be great!

You can't use that bridle you need a cavesson noseband preferably brown and whatever bit she is comfortable in, she needs to be plaited personally I would pull her tail but if you don't want to a plaited tail is fine for local shows.

You need light coloured trousers not jods short boots a shirt and tie, a jacket or waistcoat looks nice but not essential and a hat a hard hat if you think she might be a handful.

If your not looking to spend a fortune look on ebay Facebook for show gear always loads for sale, the equitech stuff is really nice I have the showing cord trousers a waistcoat and shirts from them all look the part.

Google some TB in hand classes and look at the pictures to get an idea of what you should wear and colour ideas.

I have bays I wear beige cord trousers brown short boots, lemon short sleeve shirt navy and gold tie, navy waistcoat, navy velvet beagler hat and brown gloves.

She looks lovely. Beige trousers would be best against her dark legs but if you dont have any then dark colooured trousers would be okay. Good luck.

Thankyou very much. The waistcoat has that got to be tweed or can it be any colour like blue, grey etc. As I’ve seen many of them on the fb market

Thankyou that’s a few months ago, her mane is now pulled. I’ll try and find beige trousers can they just be normal trousers not like riding ones?

It can be tweed or a colour just then decide what shirt and tie will match, I sometimes wear a white shirt with fine red stripe with my blue waistcoat and a red tie, so you can change it up a bit just as long as it looks smart.

Amazing thanks so much! I just thought I’m going to put my hair into a low bun, will my riding hat be fine to use or?

Riding hat is totally fine. If it's a skull cap put a navy silk/velvet cover on it. Gloves are a must but they can be the cheap £3 pimple palm ones in brown or navy - never black or white for showing.

For the showing bit, how it usually works at a local show is:

Everyone walks round en masse. Then everyone stops on the track and you take it in turns to trot to the back of the ride. You'll then be asked to line up, usually not in any order at this point. Try to be in the middle of the pack, so you can see what other people are doing in their individual show before you have to do it! It's usually walk forward and stand her up for the judge. Chat with the judge a little bit about age of the horse, how long you've had her, what you do with her. Walk away from the judge, then turn (keeping the horse between you and the judge) and trot back. (Head straight to the judge - they'll get out the way before you run them down.) Once everyone's completed their individual show, you'll all be asked to walk round again, and you'll be pulled back in in order.

Make sure your horse is happy trotting in hand. If they can be a bit over-enthusiastic, I find it helps to have the rein furthest from you a bit shorter, so you can apply brakes without pulling their head towards you.
