After many years of riding, I had my first ever injuries from riding yesterday - Ozzy and I both took a tumble over a jump and I ended up with (working downwards):
Shiner
Grazed chin
Grazed shoulder
Grazed inside elbow (?!)
Possible broken finger
VERY sore leg - just a badly pulled muscle.

Ozzy escaped with no obvious injuries, fingers crossed that is still the case.

What were your first riding injuries? Any odd ones?!

my first riding injury was when i was 8 and i broke my leg and had concussion :o my pony at the time desided to tank off down the field and the rodeo and i hit the post and rail fencing... not really done much worse than that since, few sprains, dislocations, broken finders and toes and bruised bones but thats about it oh and i have crushed my coccyx falling on to my bum(i dont recommend from any height but 17.2hh not good!)

only remember the more exciting ones:D

broke my collar bone aged 8yr when riding school pony tried to exit the field over the gate with me on board-neither of us made it over

broke my collar bone aged 16yr when pony bronked me off then attacked me whilst i was on floor-he had big issues turned out he had a brain tumour and was shot 3yrs later

broke my foot in 8places aged 18yrs when horse i was riding fell over cantering round a corner in the school, unfortunatly i did not fall off and when said pony landed flat on its side the stirrup iron crushed my foot

i consider myself very lucky have been riding for 32yrs and working with them for 24yrs

GOD I FEEL OLD WHEN I WRITE THAT DOWN:D

Ive had a few painful ones, but the worst was aged 13 when pony spooked, i went out the side door but managed to to get my foot stuck in stirrup, put arm out to stop my head hitting the floor and managed to break my arm in 7 places!! Nice!!!

Said pony proceeded to drag me for apparently 3 laps of the school but i wouldn't know about this as i had passed out at this point!

My first injury was when I was 9 years old, and my pony refused a jump, and I continued over it. I broke my arm, and the bone came out of the skin

That was nearly 30 years ago - I clearly remember my first time;) I wasn't in that much pain considering how bad it was, and I remember getting up, start walking over to my dad, then looking down at my arm and only then did I start screaming hysterically.

I broke my collar bone a few years later, jumping a ditch, and I suffered excruciating pain from that. That was a really awful experience, and the pain lasted for weeks.

Mostly just bruises, my first proper injury was two years ago (not bad considering I am 39). My pony bronked and twisted when were galloping flat out down a bridle way (my daughter said we were just cantering - tssk, what does she know). I landed face first in a field, concusion, whiplash, squashed glasses, grazed nose, and mouth and a fabulous action man style gash on my jaw bone.

First fall at 3 and a half from a riding school pony who was bitten on the bum by an evil Exmoor pony. Broke a bone in my left index finger as he trod on my hand.

Worst one I think was either breaking my nose when my pony bronc'd and I landed on my face in the middle of the road, or when a pony who was petrified of motor bikes dumped me off as a bike passed us. We were on a rough made hard core track and I scraped most of the skin off the underneath of my arm. Went home, put pyjama's on, went to bed and woke up with pyjama's stuck to the graze. That hurt peeling it off.

Most stupid embarrassing one was picking blackberries on a friends farm at a PC rally. I'd not checked my girth and the saddle slipped as I leaned over to pick a big juicy one. Horse spooked and I ended up in a massive pile of nettles and brambles in front of everyone. That taught me to check tack especially girths! :)

OP how the heck did you graze the inside of your elbow? I bet that one hurts!

Owwww, I wish I hadn't had a look at this thread - I'm off for a jumping lesson in a bit and now I have images of landing with a bump rather than soaring gracefully :(

Cant remember my first injury as that was ages ago, but my first serious one was when i fell off my pony jumping and landed awkwardly on the pole at the side and punctured my kidney, gave my self a bit of concusion and a sprained wrist, was in so much pain for ages!

First major one was breaking my collar bone aged 10 (ridden since a toddler). I was at a show at Stocklands (for anyone who remembers that!) and my parents told me that under no circumstances was I to 'go galloping that pony about and wearing him out' before my SJ class. So my friend and I were WALKING through the woods and the pony stumbled on a tree root - I tipped out the side door and landed awkwardly and suddenly my arm didn't work properly!

Was shipped off to Cambridge Military Hospital in Aldershot for patching up - to this day my parents don't believe that I wasn't hooning!

Broken collar bone, broken ribs, smashed hand to bits and needed reconstructing (horse hoof landed on it)

Bruised my ass a few times and damaged cocksyks (spelling!?)

I fell off the back of the pony (over its tail) the first time I cantered when I was 4. I winded myself, but my instructor just told me to 'get up, you are not hurt' (how did he know?). H & S wasn't an issue in the sixties. I have had hundreds of falls and done some painful things, but one of the most alarming for me is being winded, when you really think you are never going to breathe again!

Broken arm wen i was 8 after my pony threw me into a ditch, although that seems like nothing compared to some other posters haha

Have to agree with you there! Had a few nasty falls and been stomped on resulting in hospital stays but my last fall, where I didnt break anything, has to be the most scary because it seemed I was on my hands and knees for an eternity in the middle of a park, horse had buggered off, trying to get that first breath. Thought I was going to die there and then in front of picnicking families, it was so scary!

Stupidly wrapped rope around my hand while leading my pony when I was 11 and ripped 3 fingers off
-_-

Best bit is explaining to dressage judges why I have to hold my reins in my fist haha!

My first one was when I was 7 and my pony decided that he didn't like the pink and yellow umberella that the woman on the footpath was carrying. Pony ran off, broncing, and put me into the letter E in the school wall :D He then double barrelled me. Luckily I had my brand new BP on that I had got the day before so my chest was fine but he also got my knee and chipped a bone in it.

The next one was off of a Shetland pony, and probably my worst one to date. I had her to break and you could ride her anywhere side saddle but the minute you put a leg each side she exploded. I got halfway down the field still on board and she cantered 3 whoel stride and I thought I had cracked her. Nope! She was building up to one Mahooosive buck! I went 10ft up, landed on my head, crashed onto my back, skiied 15m along the ground and wrapped myself around a fence post - good job it was there as it stopped me from going into the burn and I can't swim awake let alone when I am KO'd! I don't remember any of this, I got told this after. I couldn't move for 4 days but amazingly nothig was broken. Concussion and that's the sum of it.

The only other bad fall I have had that gave me injuries was when one of the racehorses bolted down the road. Went to turn a corner, I slipped off the side (I had no stirrups and it was tanking down with rain!) my legs got tangled with his, we both came down in a heap, skiied along the road for 5m before stopping on the grass verge. He got up and bolted a fraction of a second before I got up. I was winded. Had cuts and bruises, had shreded my jacket, waterproofs, gloves and hat silk. The horse had skinned his joints. The saddle was ripped, the quarter sheet was in tatters, the girth was buggered, reins snapped. We had cuts, scrapes and bruises - HOW?!?!? We hit the road at full pelt! I don't get it but I am so glad it was only what it was!

Not bad considering I have been breaking in ponies since I was 10 and I have worked in racing for 8 years ... :D

I've just received my first injury in 13 years of riding 4 days ago! my youngster I'm breaking in took fright of a stationary car with someone inside and galloped off broncing up the drive where I came off, cracking my elbow and destroying all the ligaments there, massive gravel rash on my back where I skidded along the road for a metre and a sprained ankle :p never broke a bone before but my god it hurts the next day!!!

Ouch these all sound nasty! I am literally covered in bruises from being nipped constantly although I do bruise quite easily, and thrown off today, onto grass luckily, I am lying awake with very sore seat bone and hip, this horse is now seriously out of favour :-/ still no broken bones but I think plenty of dents.

Touch wood touch wood touch wood....
