I have a 6 year old who went pre novice last season quite successfully and am planning on doing a few at the start of this season and then hoping to move up to JRN and just wondered if anyone knew of a good first time JRN course??
A JRN will be exactly the same as a Novice course, so you don't need to limit yourself to just JRN's.
I would avoid Stockland Lovell and Longleat as first ones as are quite tough. Pontispool is a really nice xc but the SJ can be quite big. Gatcombe tends to be nice and big and bold. Umm minds gone blank now!
E - it depends when you want to move up - is there some rule meaning Juniors have to do JRNs? Assuming there isn't, then these are my thoughts, for what they're worth (which isn't a lot I suspect).
Forget Stockland Lovell, Barbury, Longleat, Withington, Dauntsey - they're all upgrade courses and really much more fun when you're on something experienced.
Broadway I think is built on funny distances and doesn't flow so would not be my first choice.
Pontispool is nice XC but your SJ has to be good there - I thought I'd walked the IN SJ not the N! Likewise West Wilts is always pretty nice, as is Aston le Walls, though ALW gets progressively more difficult the further through the season you go, i.e. ALW 1 is easier and less technical than ALW3
Sapey is a nice N, Goring Heath I am not keen on, Stonar apparently was much nicer last year than the year before. Cheltenham I wouldn't run a horse at again due to the ground being like concrete every time I've been there. Monmouth is lovely, I really like it there.
T - it's not that she has to do a JRN, however our PC DC is very keen for those kids who have "qualified" to be able to do them to register and have a go. As E will be 18 this year, this really would be her only opportunity to enter JRN. What surprised me was that looking through the events diary for this year, there doesn't appear to be very many JRN's in the South West. Are there more opportunities in the Central Region (as we're in Berkeley some Central events may be closer than South ones!) Also - are you allowed to do JRN's alongside Novice or would you have to enter Open Novice? I know I should sit and read the book but it's probably easier to ask the question here on.
