READ A POST CORRECTLY before replying. WHERE did I say I did not like the diet you choose to feed your dogs??? Go on tell me. I DID question why you state normal milk is a no no, yet in the next breath you say you feed rice pudding which is made with - you've guessed it NORMAL MILK!!!
 
and why have you turned so nasty in your response? I answered your query very politely so not quite sure where you are coming from to be honest. No, not all rice pudding is made with normal milk actually, people who have intolerance to milk are also entitled to have rice pudding. As your tone is so hostile, I shan't be replying to your posts again.

Surely rice pudding can be made with any sort of milk, including lactol or goats milk. Re goats milk for puppies being a myth, when my mum was breeding GSDs in the 70s all litters were reared on goats milk and minced beef and canovel vitamin tablets. Complete puppy food wasn't really about then, she was a successful breeder who reared many healthy and show winning litters in this way. I reared my most recent litters on complete feed but before that I used to give goats milk, can't say there was any difference in how the pups looked or how they grew up.
 
What is nasty is a lie about someone elses post. I asked a simple question. I did NOT write anything about NOT LIKING
THE DIET YOU FEED did I??? You cannot answer that because I did not say it!!!

My response to your post was not nasty, only a perfectly reasonable question. But as you seem to be insecure about your animal husbandry then you choose to be defensive.
 
All my dogs have been given, and continue to get at times, weetabix and (shock, horror!) normal milk with no ill effect. Also, many complete foods contain wheat, so where is the problem there? Not ALL dogs are wheat or lactose intolerant - mine certainly aren't - my Weimaraner LOVES Ambrosia rice pudding!!
Keep going with the crate training - my mum wasn't very strong with my girl when she was a puppy, and gave in to her 'screaming' at being shut in. Although she has been very good in a lot of respects, I almost feel like she has missed out by not having her own safe place to go, especially this year when she developed a fear of fireworks (she was fine last year, so I don't know why she is scared now!)

Until the advent of commercial dry kibble being readily available many dogs were fed milk, wheat biscuits, bread soaked in milk, milk and flaked maize. Just like people some dogs are lactose intolerant others not, ditto wheat based products. My parents and grandparents working gun dogs and farm dogs all were fed milk and something, plus horror of horrors fresh raw eggs every morning. All lived long and healthy lives, 14 - 17 yrs old.

I have just been to a couple of hound breeders in France whose stock all are working hounds. Their diet - left over bread from the village bakery, plus milk, eggs, and whatever meat and offal the local butcher sells the kennels in large bags. All mixed up and fed to all the dogs puppies & adults got the same. Sometimes the mix was cooked before feeding, other times not. All dogs seemed in prime health and condition, many of the older dogs still hunting as 12 - 13 yr old + vetereans.

Crate training takes a while, some pups take to it immediately others can take a week or two. Just make sure the pup has something in the crate to take her mind off the scary, lonely aspect, one of your sweaters you have worn that day, a night light on. Covering the crate with a blanket on three sides can help and the uncovered end towards your bed or where your older dog is sleeping.

I am quite secure about my animal husbandry as you put it, because I have healthy animals, so the proof as it were, is in the pudding, regardless of what it is made with.
What I object to is your tone you came on rude as you like, particularly in your second post, and you continue with that tone now. You could have asked what I meant and what pudding I used, but no, you have to start shouting and being rude.

I am not being defensive against you or towards my methods of raising puppies, what I am choosing not to answer is your out and out rudeness towards me. I would never dream of coming on here and speaking to people the way you have, and I do not expect to be spoken to this way either.

Excellent advice there, thank you so much. Pup was played with in cage and had tea in there...she then went to toilet and played and when she looked sleepy was put in the crate...she howled and whined for a good 40mins, I went in the bath! OH said she calmed down and he opened the door for her, but she fell fast asleep, and she's still asleep in there now.

Not got a travel one, but I do like the idea of a smaller one for upstairs as it's a pain moving this one up and down.
 
I love them for little dogs.....because I deal with literally hundreds at a time

and can put up to 8 dogs in my van at a time, it's a great to put he little ones in carriers, u can get really decent sized ones, esp whilst she is this age, saves humping the crate upstairs

I put 2 yorkis in a cat carrier today, to transport them.....as groomed them, then they went to sleep, curled up in it, when I had finished grooming.

whispers.....go to your local vets...they prob have loads of left over cat carriers....u could buy one for a fiver.....my mams vets sold all of theirs b4 xmas in the waiting room

Hi Cala,

We're booked in for 1st Vx next Wed so will ask then. I have a cat carrier but think that will be far too small!

One question....should I wake her up if she's sleeping through meal times??

Also, she's not eating a huge amount at the mo. I know she's still new and stuff, so am just going on the size of her tummy for the mo, but worried she's not eating enough. She's getting half a pouch of pedigree puppy and a handful of the biscuits she came with....i wet it a little and she eats half, if that.

God, you wouldn't think I used to be a VN...so much easier with other people's animals!
 
I personally would not wake her for meals.....and I would not worry if she does not eat a full meal.....she is a single puppy now, no siblings to contend with.

I never worry when dogs or puppies dont eat a full meal, there is no hard and fast rule, aslong as they are active, happy curious and bright in themselves and there is no serious weight loss, they are clearly getting enough, I even cut meals out at a young age if they are barely eating one, there are far more exciting things to tend to at that age, than food

....it's a waste really, just pick it up, when she has had her fill, and if she is sleeping, feed her when she wakes, prepare it, and if the smell wakes her, even better, if not, let sleeping dogs lie

MM, I think that's because Goats milk is the best of all of the milks but still doesn't compare with the mothers milk or good quality powdered puppy milk.

Regarding Beef, another intolerence of dogs due to the way it's produced now, notice how you rarely, if ever see a well known complete dog feed manufacturer selling 'beef & veg' (example), Venison, lamb, pork, chicken, fish e.t.c yes but not ever Beef. It's also why you always see hounds s******g through the eye of a needle and why often they don't look great on it, obviously most kennels don't feed sheep as it smells as it tastes and can cause them to sheep worry (not what you want!) and pork is in short supply so most hounds are either biscuit fed or have a diet of calves meat.

Not trying to teach you to suck eggs, I've learnt loads from you on here and you're one of my most respected forum members!

Ok, 'well known' was the wrong expression. It's Pedigree Chum, says it all! I was thinking more along the lines of Royal Canin, Burns, JWB, Hills e.t.c

You're right about not many of the well known foods including beef, expect Pedigree Chum has been shown a cow and that is about it. Certainly the minced beef was probably a lot different when mum used to use it. I occasionally feed pet mince from a local butcher which is the cuts not used in his shop and some bone all ground up. Sounds awful I know but the dogs do relaly well on it and the bone content keeps their motions firm (sorry bit too much detail there). I just wish I could still get whole tripes to feed them on, my vets always commented on their condition, and particularly how good their teeth were. I supposed it was the BARF diet before it was invented.

Going back to the OP, I find that puppies always eat about half the amount in a new home that they used to put away when they were with the litter. Puppies very rarely starve themselves , I would worry about her, and definitely don't wake her for a meal, just enjoy the peace

Have you covered the crate with a blanket? I have found this helps to make them feel more secure, I just leave the front door uncovered but throw blanket over the top and allow it to fall down the sides at bedtime
