as above really - height is 2ft -2ft 6 i didnt expect all this rain and am worried about him slipping - so for this kind of heigh/level are studs needed? the dressage test is HN1
At this height, and if you don't use them often, then I don't think it should matter too much however if the ground is rock solid but slippy on top as it is where we are, at least, then I would think about putting some in. Also it depends on the horse - eg my youngest's pony is quite nervy and gets a bit nervous without them, he's so scared of knocking himself (so basically either stops or clears them by miles ) so we always put them in him. Good luck
Ive got my first ODE on the 26th we will be wearing some nice new shiny studs as my horse can be very sharp, and stop last minute if unsure. So to help prevent him sliding under himself we will be going for the studs. Good luck, and enjoy it!
Knowing where you are going, the dressage last year was in the school so that phase will be fine. The sj was in a reasonably small grass arena which didn't have great grass cover, and personally I would stud for that on either of mine... But j is used to studs and roo very big moving, finds corners hard enough as it is! The xc wasn't particularly tight corners etc, ground last year was very very hard and rutted, both my friends WD and I went round the very edge of the field to avoid the rutted bits, so this rain is probably a very good thing!
Also as a note, the cc speed last year was 325mpm.... That's REALLY slow! We cantered round as slowly as j would let me and got a ton of TP for going to fast.
They may have upped the xc speed this year - and possibly put the sj on surface which would make more sense maybe? Think last year was their first one.
Which horse are you taking? Best of luck!
ecrozier - aah fabulous thank you! didnt know you went last year - which height xc did you do? i am thinking of changing the class hes in as i went for the lower height because of the ground, but now theres going to be shedloads of rain so the ground should be good? ill see if my farrier can pop in on his way home - but then again i am a bit worried because hes not worn studs before? or maybe ill just go mega mega slow round the SJ? hes quick at the best of times. He didnt slip when i took him out few weeks SJ - (1st and 2nd woo! ) but it hadnt been raining them
HMMM. will see what my farrier can do, otherwise ill just be careful
taking my grey - he did so well XC at camp, so i thought id have a go
tbh if you havent already got stud holes in I really wouldnt bother you'll be fine I'm sure. Just take it steady round the corners if neccesary but you'll have an idea whether its slippy in the warm up.
