First one up has to feed all the horses rule

Someone on my yard created this system, whereby she will feed every horse who has a fed left outside their door, last year and most of the yard participate. I don't but instead I get to enjoy all the door banging when I am first up, which is most days. I have neve seen so many upset horses. Mine knows that Only I feed him so stands and waits.

It still wouldn't work for me having feed left out overnight as many of my feeds are made up with oil and sugar beet in them. The feeds would be stale and mushy by the morning.

I think it's rather naive to think that mice (and rats) can't get through a nylon bucket cover.
When ours were at livery, every-one fed their own horses - it never caused a problem.
Now that they are at home, they are all fed at the same time in the evening but we have been known to get an oldie out of the field to give breakfast, without the others wanting to come out as well because they knew that there was no food for them.

We sort of have this: I'm often first up, so I feed my row. It's odd, cos my horse isn't fed. If a friend's horse has run out of hay, I'll text and ask if she wants a hay net thrown up.

Most people will feed their row or various horses depending on who is in etc.

i used to be at a yard where this happened it started with throwing a feed over the door to turning all 7 horses out, it was a nightmare at 6 in the morning. im glad im out.

I can see both sides to this. Yes, its a bit hard for other horses to watch just yours getting his or her bucket, but since it takes me half an hour minimum just to drive to my horse and I have lots to do in the time it takes her to eat up, and if I'm late leaving the dire traffic will then be at a complete standstill, I'm afraid I flat refuse to get up even earlier to do other people's work for them. I also don't like the idea of leaving feed and haynets outside the stable door where the poor animals can see and smell them and almost but not quite touch them - that must be awful for them - no wonder they start kicking their doors. Also, god help you if one gets loose in the night and goes around scoffing all the free breakfasts. I have a strict rule that no-one but me feeds my horse in the mornings (for good medical and safety reasons) and as she doesn't associate the other owners with giving her anything, she just waits patiently and quietly until I arrive.

I do not pay £60 per week to use my precious time to feed everybody elses horses. If my yard had this rule or similar I'd be out. I work too may hours to waste my down time dealing with other peoples horses.

we have this at our yard, there's about 30 ish horses which have feeds left outside. Only the RS and some liveries don't have feeds outside. First one up usually feeds their row, sometimes I feed everything else (If they haven't been done) if I have the time. I don't do haynets unless I have time, (luckily there's only 2). Works well especially as some people don't come up till later.

I'm no longer at livery but when I was, we just fed our own, and it is very truie that the horses know who feeds them. They simply don;t bother with people that don;t feed them, so I would ofetn be first up, feed my two. The other 12 horses on the yard ignored me as they knew I didn;t feed them. If someone was going to be late, or going away, then we would arrange among ourselves who would feed for who.

I was always up before work so really wouldn;t want to be doing other peoples horses whenI was in a hurry.
