I am 14, and rode when i was 10 for quite a while. I did walk/trot/canter and a lot of hacking!! I would love to get back into it as last time i moved away from the riding school and my nearest one wasn't that good. I am now looking into a part loan, one or two days a week as it will be much more than riding. My question is, if i am riding the horse, do i need to tack it all up by myself? I go to school at 8am so im not sure if i could visit in mornings but if i had to then i probably could for half an hour. I could go for at least three hours on my days and could groom/muck out but would need the owner there first few times incase i messed up (more with checking feet and how much hay to put in etc). Please help!!!

If you mean you haven’t ridden in 4 years I would definitely get lessons for a few months and maybe help out at the yard on weekends? (I help out and get a free lesson) once you can comfortably ride and you feel confident in walk, trot and canter start looking for part loans BUT DONT stop lessons you should carry on your lessons so that may be a problem if you don’t have enough money! Yes you would have to tack up by yourself and probably ride by yourself and find a way to get there so you would have to make sure someone could do that for you! Also when you get back to school you would have to ride in the evenings on school days (can’t do this in the winter though!) or weekends! It usually takes me 2-3 hours minimum overall when I hack out, this includes grooming, tacking up, catching the horse, the actual ride (usually most would want you to hack for 40-90+ mins) and then mucking out, untacking, feeding if you have to do this and getting there and back so as you see this is probably going to be a struggle if your not used to it on a school morning!
Also the sharer will want to see you ride before they decide wether you can share their horse usually and will want to know your level of experience etc. so I would get some lessons first just to know because I forgot a couple things when I had a break! They will also watch you tack up etc so will decide on things like that if you are capable of doing it by yourself. Most usually want you to walk, trot and canter comfortably and depending on what your doing with the horse you may need to jump?

Hope this helped!

It might work for you to find someone in your area who is like my friend. She has a girl come up on a Saturday to help with jobs, poo picking, catching ponies in and grooming them etc, then my friend will ride one pony and the girl another and they go out for a ride. It means the girl that comes always has someone there to help if she has problems and she is learning more about keeping ponies :)

I used to have a young girl, like yourself come up to ride out with me on one of my horses. I wouldn't let anyone ride a horse of mine or care for it until I knew they were capable and I'm sure I'm not alone. I let my "young friend" have lessons on the horse and do the odd competition as well. I didn't charge anything as I wanted my horse ridden and I was pleased to have a companion to hack out with. Although she stopped riding with me when she went to uni, I am still in touch wth her. Keep up your lessons and I'd advertise in your local feed shop and on the local riding club FB page.

Have messaged a few riding schools in the area about helping out, think my friend is coming too as im not great socially. Watched a few videos which jogged my memory a lot on tacking up etc. so think i should be ok after a month or so of lessons and helping out
