I think the picture straight off inside HHO this week(just got it!) epitomises what some of us were saying about badmintons winner.

But surely a photo is a moment in time as on Eventing the horse looks really happy.
Photos can be used and twisted very easily depending on what you want to see.

I wasn't going to re-ignite this topic, but since someone else has... the horse has his ears flat back, his eyes are wide in alarm and he looks far from relaxed and happy with his situation. And as for the tangle of reins flying about his neck.... utterly irresponsible. The picture does sum up what lot of us having been saying, ie that this was a highly dangerous and careless display.

If you see my horse doing xc when I say go he has the same look with ears back. The roar of the crowd would have been huge as well which would explain the look on his eyes. I defy anyone to say a horse will look really happy after 20,000 people scream at once.

Look at HB how miserable she looks.

I cant post it as no scanner etc.
Haven't seen the eventing pic?
Yes, entirely true about the noise, but a lot of the arguement was that the horse was enjoying himself-not there he wasn't as the reins were dropped..
XC-when you say go, what do you mean?

lec, thanks for trying but I'm afraid some people - as if they hadn't had enough of their previous and most futile attempts at shooting down their own secret frustrations - can't hear your point

...I still can't believe that the couple of minutes of this guy expressing overwhelming joy over winning Badminton is still in the conversations

Nothing better to do maybe ?

I can think of so many other examples of human disgrace worth of our anger and indignation

BTW, Hildago is in perfect health in spite of his first exposure to the most gigantic turnout of spectators roaring and clapping at him after a 3-day marathon where he was led home safe and sound by his rider.

Right I'll go find some secret frustrations to bouy up your theory..as soon as I find some I'll let you know!
As I say, I bought the mag, and it was there, you may have noticed (or not) I did not post on NT thread after airing my views, and I refuse to be shot down for them.

hardly, a few seconds' worth of exuberance and minor thoughtlessness can hardly be compared to half a minute or more of ignoring a horse's blatant suffering. i cannot believe anyone would draw such a parallel.

hahaha yes, i posted about that, and strangely didn't get any answers about it.

Nothing strange about it.

People tend to get bored and not reply when a subject becomes repetitive.

I didn't get into the first *discussion* as I didn't have time, but I do now.

I think it is UTTERLY ridiculous that all people can say about NT is "Oh naughty boy for dropping his reins after winning Badminton"
smirk.gif
I wouldn't have cared if he had done a bloody handstand on the horse, he had JUST WON BADMINTON!!! And all this stuff about the horse looking unhappy, sorry but I don't buy it either. I used to always drop my reins after a round and clap my horses on both sides of the neck and when NT did it at the end of the SJ I smiled as I knew how he felt (albeit me on a rather smaller scale LOL) as the total jubilation of jumping a round that counts is immense and screw the people who can only critisise him, the guy had just nursed his horse safely home over 3 days of tough competition, he IS allowed to forget himself for a moment - jeez!

You can't make a horse do something it doesn't want to... esp. at that level!! if it was a truely unhappy horse, then there's no way it would have won Badminton!!

Don't think thats ALL people can say,. It is a habit I've seen him doing before. I dont like it, I think it shows no respect for a horse that has carried him round one of the toughest events in the world and risks injury. All this has been said before. I am entitled to my opinion.
I have not said all who said the horse is obviously happy/not injured etc are wrong, stupid, dont know what they're talking about, jealous, so extend me the same courtesy please.

whoa this is still in convo?? lol!! i sort of agree that he is a bit of a twat to do it and keep doing it, epsecially that fast on a circle. But he had just won badders, and like Weezy after i finish a jump off i do it...maybe not quite to that extent!! And also, the horses ears/eyes/expression is no different to that of a racehorse, and so it goes on...personally i have no major problem with it.

If the horse carried him around, and it is all about the horse, then why does it matter if he dropped his reins, because in your view the horse was doing all the work anyway

How does giving a horse its head show the horse no respect? I think NT clearly showed how much he respects his horse by riding it superbly and the way he sobbed into his neck after the realisation dawned that he had won.

And of course you are entitled to your opinion, but I truely do not understand what you thought he did that was so abhorrant.

I have just read this thread and missed previous ones (fortunately)!!! I cant believe what I have read!!

What a load of tosh, the horse took him round badminton, so he drops his reins! I think the horse can hold itself up on flat ground dont you? So WHAT!

owning an ex competition horse, who is now 28 and has always had the ability to say when he has had enough, whilst there are many genuine horses, horses DO NOT win badminton if they are not enjoying it!!, they simply stop/fall etc, its a testing course and as we saw, plenty did say no.

Give the guy a break FGS, some people need to get out on their own horses more and have fun!!

Armchair critics.....make my blood boil, how many of those who feel dropping the reins is a sin and the horse wasnt having a party have ridden the badminton course?

Quite frankly until the people commenting negatively have ridden round and won Badminton, I don't think you are qualified to talk.
Leave the man alone and get on with your lives, its like the WI in here!

WWS-the hrose wasn't having a party. I would think thats fairly obvious.
I'm an eventer and anyone can express an opinion, you are of course entitled to yours. I am entitled to mine that it was a bad move and one he has done before.
Not sure what your horse has to do with it or horses not enjoying the course, nobody said they didn't..or anything like it, just that the rein dropping is a stupid habit, and we wished he hadn't done it. And the first pic in HHO emphasises all the points made about it last week.

How mature..
I do hope your not saying anything about the rider or his horse as since you dont ride at that level you obviously cannot say he is good or not as you obviously cannot have an opinion?
Riding School jealousy..interesting term, do expand?
There are plenty of top riders who don't necessarily respect their horses but ride at top level.
It's not a saga, people said they didn't like what he did, others said they didn't see anything wrong with it, if you can't remain civilised, go play in the Common Room.
I don't think anyone said he shouldn't have won etc.Certainly there may be others that were preferred to win, how that affects that I wouldn't be impressed if they did that either and would have said does confuse me.

QR I can not believe that this is being rehashed.

I am seriously questioning how the horse even managed to get round badminton, if it is not capable of holding himself together for all of two minutes!

They can, and they do. The horses isn't going to break in to pieces if you, god forbid, dropped the reins.

The horse was fit, well cared for, and not on its last legs, so why all the fury?

H's Mum did a great thread and I think this actually comes down to people wanting to molly coddle horses again.

Stop treating them as if they can't put one foot in front of the other without our assistance.

Riding school jelousy - Where everyone hates the girl with the better pony, the bigger lorry, the nicer tack, the posher boots, the whiter jodpurs.

He. Dropped. His. Reins.

The horse did not drop dead, the world didn't come to an end, birds are still singing, everything is hunky dory.

I didn't watch anything horsey that weekend, am starting to see why with some of the comments you have been putting forward about the poor man.

But it wasn't doped, he didn't ride it after it's tendon snapped, he didn't hurt it, a spectator or anyone or anything.

Why the hell is everyone being so damn snotty nosed about it all? Like you're all ever 100% perfect 100% of the time that you can slag off a man for dropping his reins!
