when getting a new horse how long would you leave it before riding??

after a big upheavel my new arrival isnt 100% settled yet, and was wondering how long i should leave it before expecting him to work?

thanks

I ride [or 'work' even if just lunging or long reining them round if they're green/sharper] them the same day, or the following morning if I don't have time. Start as you meant to go on!

same day if they seem fairly settled, next day if they need time or its too late etc.
I feel riding helps them settle into their surroundings

With the last horse I bought I gave him two days to settle in the field with his new friends and then got on board.

If I'd waited until he was totally settled I'd have been waiting months......

It depends how unsettled the move made him.If hes constantly pacing and stressed in the field or stable ....snorting..spooking at new surroundings I would spend more time on the ground initially..and walk about in hand before riding. Also depends how old the horse is and how much experience the rider has.Trust your own judgement ..if you feel their not ready to be ridden don,t push things too quickly.

Don't leave it too long. Bree needed some dental work so wasn't ridden for nearly a fortnight - she bucked and bolted round the school (although in a slightly half hearted seeing what she could get away with way).
