First ride on your youngster.

this was the first time I sat on Chico - he went off to be professionally started the next week. He took it all in his stride.

think I only have one photo of the absolute first ride on any of mine...

Everyones pictures are lovely, and your video is amazing. What a fantastic rider. So quiet, calm and relaxed. Fantastic. Absolutely Fantastic.
Well done you. :}x

Ooh JT I love your video, SO helpful to see how someone started theirs out!

Please keep this thread going, very useful!

Baby Highland (not mine, but I look after him.. he thinks of it as abuse! :p
Backed by me etc, this was the first week, about the third trot.
He is such a quick wee learner. Was fabulous to back and break.

Excuse the legs being pinned forward- due to the saddle that I hate with a passion and the sheer width of the Baby Highlands belly :p:rolleyes:
:D:D

I suppose it doesn't really count as it was first sit not first ride, we haven't done that yet but pictures anyway :)...

my youngster doing her very best donkey impression the first time sitting on :) within 30 seconds or so she had relaxed to the point of slouching and resting her hind leg  dopey ginger giant! (eta mexican noseband done up VERY loosely, I could have sworn I had a standard cavesson floating round but couldn't find it :()

(sorry for picture size!)

My youngster on his second ride, late in his three year old year.

He was a diamond, got back on him for the first time, after his winter off on Saturday and he was a superstar. Love him to bits.

Here is my homebred, on her first sit on outside. She was 3, I did her all by myself and she was no problem at all. She has grown since and her legs are not quite so short!!

God, I'm nothing special. She makes me look much better than I am as she is so easy. She's a bright little button and it all clicked very quickly with her. The first time I asked her to canter she popped straight up and just stayed there. After teaching BH ( I have vids of that too of course as I am a geek) it all seemed very easy. I don't have video of her cantering as after three rides OH stopped coming to help me as I could get on her myself and just get on with it, so he wasn't there to do picture duty! That's how easy she was to back.

I can't wait to get back on her now she's had a break for it to sink in. Just need her to recover from her various war wounds and we'll be off. I plan to mostly hack this summer. It is very tempting to take her in the school as she is bright and willing and I'm going to have to work very hard not to do too much too soon with her!

ETS:

here are BH's first canters (quality not great I'm afraid!) he doesn't make me look half as tidy

And first sit on my current pony last summer when he was 3:

He didn't do any more after this until last week when we tried a saddle:

Once the saddle turns up I'm going to crack on with getting him backed which should be pretty easy as he's a really sweet, laid back, fun pony :)

Within a couple of days of being first sat on and off on a short hack down the track:
