What age do you get a young horse wearing a rug? I was planning on desensitising my yearling to one this summer in prep for winter. However I've since read that some people have had bad experiences where their youngsters have been OK in the stable wearing a rug, but then panicked once turned out in the field with a rug 'following them' for the first time and gone through a fence. Not sure if it's worth the risk. If he was a hardy native I certainly wouldn't bother, but he's a lightweight Kwpn.

Get them used to it in the stable then get them used to it being lead about the yard. Done over time with sympathy they won’t panic.

Mine had a little fleece draped all over him as soon as I got him as a 7 month weanling.

He was rugged up over the worst of his weanling/yearling winter last year as the constant rain was just miserable. The 50g amigo proper pony rugs fitted his narrow gangly shape brilliantly. It is just so important that their rugs fit well, I think every horse deserves that but it is essential for the babies.
